New M7 Turbo Heat Shield for '11 JCW:WTF?

M7 just released (8/29) their new Turbo Heat Shield with Aero Gel for 2011 JCW (and MCS?). Got mine yesterday and put it on this AM. Not exactly the best fit for a product that took nearly a year to come to market. What is worse--I have noticed none-zero--zilch reduction in radiant heat--heat to the bonnet and hood scoop. Took a 5 mile drive and would have burned my hand on the bonnet above the turbo after the car sat for several minutes. $200--I am not a happy camper. I imagine not too many '11 owners have purchased this HS yet. Curious for feedback from '10 owners that have purchased the '10 version of the product.

I have had the $30 Waymotorworks shield that hooks up beneath the scoop since my second day of ownership back in June. I guess I figured I would have greatly reduced the turbo heat with my investment. Looks like I guessed wrong. Nick

Thanks for letting me complain. Nick

The back part--with the double-sided tape doesn't fit flush with the engine block(?) and it kind of droops and doesn't sit like one would think it would--over the turbo. I didn't major in English, which should be readily apparent from reading the preceeding. I guess you saw no issue with the lack of reduction of heat on to the bonnet--which was my major concern. You know, pay $200 and see no reduction in what was a concern of mine---the excessive heat/radiant heat from the turbo on the bonnet. Nick

So your saying that your "Waymotorworks shield that hooks up beneath the scoop " does no good? Your scoop melted? I just got my Clubman and put it on the next day. Should I not expect the Waymotorworks shield to prevent the issue?

I just got the M7 shield with the gel and the fitting is not top notch imo. True the 3m tape doesnt sit flush with the valve cover. The other thing I dont like is that its sitting on the turbo itself. Like its just loose there on the turbo, laying on it with two bolts. Dont like it at all.

I got the M7 aerogel heat shield for my 2011 JCW a year ago, it was available then. 5 min. install, fits perfect, the hood only gets warm. It should not seem loose and should not lay on the turbo.

Not according to the M7 web site and their reps. They changed the design and didn't start shipping the '11HS til late August of this year. Please chime in M7. Nick

Maybe I'm missing something. I looked on their website. I don't see a "JCW" heat shield. The new heat shield for 2011 on their site is for a 2011 MCS, with the N18 engine. A 2011 JCW has the same engine as a 2010 MCS or JCW. Just checked my 8/2/10 invoice from M7, it says R56 turbo heat shield. I'm thinking maybe the OP got the new heat shield for the 2011 MCS, and should have got the 2006-2010 R56 heat shield which fits the 2011 JCW.

Yeah it's weird. It came with two bolts and two washers that's it. I bolt down the shield and it lays on the oem heat shield. No space at all.

Just in the process of sending back my M7 aerogel shield for my 2012 MCS. The fitment of the shield with tape was really bothering me - Isn't that going to be a long-term issue?

The NM titanium shield looks and fits better imho. It has an extra connection point along the side, and no need for the tape.

Check out Way Motor Works. Way sells a heat shield combo that gets you the NM titanium and the under hood bolt on shield. With the 2012, I did not need the third part of the combo. I think it was the same for the 2011s too, but not 100%.

The combo is around 200 or so. Oh and the under hood shield needed two automotive bolts that I found at the local Ace hardware.

That NM shield, does it require you to remove the plastic valve cover attachment that hides the spark plug wires? The cover with the MINI emblem on it.

Thanks, one last question though before I pull the trigger and buy one. I see it mounts at 3 points. The two bolts by the engine, do they mount to the two empty threaded holes already there or do you have to undo the bolts of the oem heatshield? Can seem to find the info on the website. Thanks again.

Yes the two posts install to the open threaded sockets. No need to remove those OEM heatshield bolts to install.

However, the third bolt requires you to temporarily unscrew one of the OEM bolts. Do this while the engine is cool. You've been warned! Its a washer with a threaded bracket that you use to make the third connection.

Easy install, dude! To help with the heat in the engine compartment, I've replaced my hood scoop grill with this:
