Has anyone fixed the "death rattle" themselves?

Has anyone fixed the timing chain/tensioner issue by themselves? I mean, besides the need for special tools I'm sure, it's still a timing chain and tensioner. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, I've done timing chains, timing belts, transmissions, engine overhauls, etc, (on other cars), how hard could this problem be to repair yourself?

If I purchase and most likely keep a 2007-8-9 Cooper S past the warranty stage, I'll probably be working on it myself. Just wondering what I'm getting in to.

Thanks!

Didn't do it myself, but when I had my tensioner replaced they did it while I waited. About 3.5 hours total and probably a good half of that time was waiting for them to diagnose. I'd guess the actual repair itself only took 1 - 1.5 hours. So can't imagine it is too difficult for someone who has the tools and mechanical aptitude to get around the engine.

Not sure how much more complicated the more intensive fix is at it includes replacement of the timing chain and some guides. If you can find the SIM here on the site, it details what is supposed to be done based on the amount of intervention.

If you install the new and improved tensioner, you may never have to do it, as you won't have a problem.

30K on mine since the tensioner was replaced, not a sound out of it since.

reasonably priced...

I've been doing some browsing online, and found tensioners for around $50 - if the factory one is 3 times that, it's still pretty cheap...heck I can fix this. I'm guessing the special tools you'll need are more than the part itself, but I don't mind adding another weapon to my arsenal :D

Thanks!

yes, it's covered under warranty as long as you still have warranty left.

Does anyone know what the "special tool" required is called, and how much it cost?
Also, I contacted our Mini dealer Orlando and was told that not just anyone can replace the timing chain and tensioner as it needs to be calibrated via a computer program that only they have... is there any truth to this?

I just ordered part 11317607551 off parts.com. It was only $19. If anybody has any info on installation I'd love to hear it. It seems like you would just unscrew the old one and put the new one in.

Neil, you have a 1st Gen car, this only refers to 2nd gen cars. Your problem is a noisey dual mass flywheel, learn to live with it till you need a new clutch, it's not hurting anything.....
