R56 Auto lock?
Auto lock?
Hi guys,
I currently have the automatic lock set to lock when driving away and when the doors are unlocked.
However, I don't think it's working :( Can someone help me out and tell me how long it takes the car to automatically lock when all the doors are unlocked?
Thanks!

Im confused
the auto door locks work by speed I believe. Not sure what you are asking about time ?
Be careful not to get too deep into the computer or you will put it into a track mode like I did and now I can;t find anyone that can correct it
I was trying to turn off the auto locks....so be careful......and motor on!!

You can set the car locks with the following 3 options:
1) locks when it's driving away (via certain speed)
2) locks after a certain amount of time when doors are closed but unlocked
3) combination of 1&2
I'm referring to option #3 which is what I have set them to.

I have mine set the same way. As soon as I drive away (come up to speed ~ 5mph) the doors lock. When parking I thought the doors would lock after a time period but I have not seen that part of the car locking working.

When you unlock the car with your key fob and then NEVER OPEN any doors, then the doors will automatically lock in about 3 min. (If a door is opened then the auto locking is canceled until you close the doors and press unlock again). Also works the same when using the comfort access door button.
I can't see the point in this.... Maybe if you had just walked away from your car and pressed the unlock button when you meant to press lock?.. OR the unlock button is inadvertently pressed from inside your house.....might be useful.
This is what I was expecting.... You stop the car get out shut the doors and walk away... the doors automatically lock.... It does not do that.

Fill out your sig so we know what your are driving, STIG.
See page 23 and 24 of your manual - at least in my 2010 manual those are the pages. I have the manual down loaded to my PC from the owner's lounge, for quick reference.
Be sure you selected the right symbol and switched it on. It took me quite awhile to get it set - and the wife could not set things at all - she would wait too long and the system would start over. MINI could of made it easier..... Or the MA's should be setting things to our preference at delivery.

Hi all,
Thanks for all the responses - yes I've checked to make sure that it wasn't user error with the settings on the OBC.
Unfortunately, the car is not locking when I drive away nor when it's stationary (with all doors closed and unlocked). I've made an appointment at the dealer for Monday morning to get it checked out as I just got the car last week.
Will update when I find out more! Thanks everyone!

This means that every time you get into your car you must unlock the door with YOUR fob or place it in the slot before you start the engine (for those with comfort access), otherwise the system will use the settings of the other fob.
Try programming both fobs the same for the lock feature.
I don't know if I would want my car automatically locking when I park it in my garage and walk away into the house.
I can understand that. I guess I was thinking more along the lines if I was out and about either in a public parking lot or on the streets.
Glad the MINI with comfort access will not allow you to lock the doors with a fob inside. Well there are ways... but it takes some doing.
While this is more of feeling, than based on hours of testing and observation, but I think the auto-lock on our MINI's is a bit more than simply "if speed > 5 then lock doors". I know that mine don't always auto-lock at 5 mph, and believe its due to a lot more conditions, designed in, just to eliminate the cases where one would not want the doors to lock.
I mean, if you stop to pick someone up with your MINI, and manually unlock the passenger door with the center switch, does the passenger door then auto-lock when you reach 5 mph?
I had the auto lock feature on an aftermarket alarm system that I installed on my car years ago. Went in to pay for gas and my passenger got out and closed the door..... clunk... keys locked in the car at the pump....

If I might add something. In the past you could set the car to unlock when the ignition was turned off. Now that is gone on the gen 2 cars. Almost every manufacturerer has that available on their cars and Mini goes backwards and takes it away. Even my GTI had that. I have a 2007 MCS. Every manufacturer does stuff that is so basic and stupid you wonder why did they do that. The, unlock when you turn off the car feature, was great. What brilliant and clever reason would BMW have to take it away? I bet they will say people complained about it.
Jak112460, I totally agree. The Germans give us the ability to program options on the gen 2 MINIs and then take away the option to unlock the doors when the car is shut off. Totally brilliant engineering.
Follow-up -
Brought my car to the dealer - long story short, they weren't able to figure out the problem but the car fixed itself...
The technician set it to just "auto lock after drive away" (it worked) and set it back to "auto lock after drive away and lock when stationary" and now it works. Weird.
The technician noted that it's hard for them to tell when the car is in sleep mode and will trigger the automatic lock feature after 3 minutes or 10...

My car was delivered with the auto-lock on. As soon as they locked I swung around & had them deactivate them. On my R53 it can only be done by the mother-ships computer. Nice that you can program functions yourself on the R56.

I just hate it when I come back out to the garage to get something out of the trunk, only to find my car all locked up (and the keys are back in the house).
Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but door locking is a function I'd just rather not have automated. I'm pretty conscientious about locking the car when I feel it needs to be locked, and I don't need any help.
Occasionally I drive the in-laws' Buick, which locks all four doors when you put the tranny in Drive or Reverse. I immediately unlock it again, mostly just to show it who's boss... and besides, years back, when my family had a Volvo, the manual advised against locking the doors when driving. I think the point was that you lock out emergency help if you have an accident - not that it would take them long to get in, but still... I think you can overdo the automation to the point that it becomes more of an annoyance than a benefit.
Lastly, if the point of locking the doors when the car is moving is meant to ensure that the doors don't open inadvertently during an accident, isn't that the function of the latches, not the locks?
Rant over...

You quoted the auto unlock feature that was turned on through programming. Based upon your description you don't like the auto-lock feature after the vehicle has been exited and sitting. The one you quotes stated that once the car is shut off and key removed the doors unlock...that would be neat to me.
