R56 did you replace your antenna with a stubby?
Here's a couple quick pics:

Thanks so much!
I run a 7" rubber from Lo Custom. With it's internally wound wire, it's like a 57" antenna.

I'm very happy with this. Yes you can get even shorter antennas...for most markets it won't matter...but from what I have read on NAM of some people having problems with reception in certain markets using the shorter antennas...I feel like this one should be the best over all mix of form v.s. function...especially if you plan to travel with the car at all.
It is "significantly" shorter than the OEM...looks great on the car...and based on the way it is constructed and tuned it should work every bit as well as the OEM.
I haven't had the chance to really "try it out" on a fringe area yet...but if anything I believe that the reception actually sounds better to be than the OEM.

Purchased my stubby from www.outmotoring.com while at the dragon. Like the look and no change in reception.
My car won't be in until Monday, but I've got a stubby ready to go on. Picked it up on eBay - it's one of those 3" anodized black and carbon fiber jobs. Quality looks decent - will have to see if reception is any good.
If the reception isn't up to par maybe I'll put it on my wife's Focus to replace the ratty stock antenna - the rubber on the base is all cracked and falling off.

i never use the radio so got the shortest thing i could find on ebay. it's metal of some sort. i spray painted it after a year and it ( i think) looks great. people have complimented me on it too and asked where to get one like it. hah. all that said, when i do use the radio it's fine. i am in the city though
Funny, I thought the very same thing. Radio reception isn't superior in the Denver area, but with this antenna...no more static.
I've got one from a board member. I don't know exactly which one it is but it sure looks like this one...
I've heard that the rubberized one for Honda Elements and S2000s will fit as well. Mine looks very similar to one of those but I haven't actually compared the threading. If you like the Honda antenna drive down to a dealer and try it out.

Its funny, when I had the MINI serviced I've had both an 128 and a 323 as loaner cars. The reception in both of them was inferior to that of my MINI
I bought the Craven Speed stubby from the marketplace here on NAM. Unfortunately, I purchased the 2nd Gen. antenna instead of the 1st Gen. Anyone know a cheap source for the threaded portion that steps down from 6mm to 5mm?
I also have an amateur radio license and know a little bit about antennas. I can't speak for how some of these other stubby antennas are built...but I believe that the one you and I picked is actually put together the way that it should be.
I'm not a form over function kind of guy...more of a best form for the particular function type...
Thanks for your advice.
I have one if you want it. Just PM me an address, and I'll drop it in the mail for you.
Yup...sounds really clear to me as well. I'm going to carry the OEM in my car and sometime when I'm driving out of town I'm going to compare the two side-by-side in a fringe area. I'll report back.

We made the antenna to fit both even though they have different thread pitches. If you have one made in the in the last few years you should just need a M6 threaded insert, no step required. I would be happy to send you one of those if 10Zero hasn't taken care of it already. (Thanks 10Zero for the assist)

Thanks for any and all help.

I just did a little experiment on my way home from the touchless car wash where I had removed my antenna mast. Driving home without it I had pretty much normal clear reception on all of the local FM stations.
Which means if you live in a major city market that it might be a true statement that: "NOTHING works as good as a $30 stubby mast antenna".
If you live in a big city with strong signals...and don't care about reception when you drive cross country in fringe areas...I'd buy the absolutely cheapest thing you can find...or run with nothing at all. Or... if you do care about reception when you travel to other markets...I'd carefully consider the advice of those that have switched out masts in the cities with apparently crappy reception.
