Turbo Question

This is the first time I've ever owned a turbo, but I have a few buddies that own other turbo cars and they use turbo timers.

Do most of you wait 60 seconds at idle before shutting her down? Or do you just shut it down? Has BMW engineered something that makes it so we don't have to let it idle to cool off?

TIA!

I think you'd only need to wait before shutting down if you were at the track or something. Otherwise the car will run coolant through the turbo at shut down which I'm guessing should be fine. Maybe just drive easy for a few minutes before turning it off if you've been driving it hard.

I don't know much about this, but I believe that BMW made so that the cooling + Fans are running if it detects the engine is hot after its been turned off... It did that on my dad's 328i and does sometimes on my mcs

or maybe I'm wrong and the car is buzzing at me

I drive slow thru my neighborhood, 25mph, and it takes me a good 30secs to get to my house. I sit for a few seconds longer, then kill the engine. The MINI comes with an auxilary pump for the turbo, that keeps pumping oil through it for awhile. You can hear the pump sometimes after shutdown.

Yeah I always wondered what the whirring noise was after shut down. II guess this confirms what I thought. And I've started to keep it as low revs as possible through the neighborhood.

it's not really an aux. pump.. that is the water pump.. which is driven electrically rather than belt driven like cars of yesteryear...

the car leaves the pump running after the car is off to continue circulating coolant thru the system and the turbo..

as for turbo timing... unless ur booting it up and down and then stop and turn it off.. u usually don't need to worry about turbo timing.. especially on modern wet turbo's

The owner's manual states that there's no need to idle the engine to cool the turbo... it says to just shut it off and don't worry about it, I assume for the reasons posted above... coolant will continue to circulate after shutdown, if necessary. That said, I live and work in a quiet residential neighborhood, and seldom shut down after a hard run.
