R56 Mini oil
No matter
I now have 4 1/2 quarts of brand new 5W30 BMW oil thanks to the nice parts manager at the dealer.
The system is so clean now, that I can't see the oil on the dipstick.
Secret, is to pull the dipstick and touch from above til you get oil on your finger. That is where the oil level is.

One thing I learned by reading the "Bob is the Oil Guy" forum (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/) is how to decode the codes on Castrol oil bottles. MINI/BMW oil is made by Castrol.
The code on your dark oil bottle says that your dark oil was packaged on the 25th day of the year 2005.
Your lighter oil was packaged on the 312th day of the year 2007.
So this means that they must have switched to the lighter oil sometime after 2005.

Could the darker oil come from the bottom of the tank and be due to settling of some elements?
