R56 I'm scared
Not always. Just found out that I need my second transmission in my 2002 Honda. No guarantee for any manufacturer. Trust me.
my 2012 countryman s all4 manual, 7 months, 7000+ miles, zero problems
my car was included in the coolant temp sensor "recall", was done in 45 minutes while i waited

my dad's 2012 countryman s all4 auto, 14 monthes, 7000+ miles, zero problems, bought 7 months ago, ex demo/loaner
his car was included in the coolant temp sensor "recall", was done in 45 minutes while i waited (i took it in for him)

i have done 2 oil/filter changes on both cars myself, dad's has has a third oil/filter change at the dealer under the 3 year included maintenance and i have rotated the tires on both cars once at 5000 miles
my car has the 18" wheels with "summer" tires, they have less than 1/2 the tread left, they wear fast, but stick like glue
dad's car has the stock 17" wheels with "all-season" tires, they look like new at 7000 miles
my sister has a 2009 mcs manual, exact age unknown to me, total mileage unknown by me, but i do know zero problems, all maintenance has been covered by the 6 year/100,000 extended maintenance plan (except some extra oil/filter changes done by my brother-in-law), including brake pads and rotors, they are on their second set of all-season tires

No Problems
Don't worry so much, there are many of us out there that have not had problems. My 2011 R 56 JCW has not had but on situation, and that was handled very nicely, by my dealer. There seems to have been a thermostat housing problem on some cars. That was my only problem, unless you call getting more fuel mileage than the sticker states, or that the performance is higher than published, or that it is just plain, lots more fun to drive than any car that I've driven before. Then, those are problems.
Seriously though, there are many guys/gals that expect way too much out of a $30K car. They expect $80K interiors ect for our Mini's costs. Actually, I know of one guy that did have one of those $100,000 cars that had nothing but problems, from interior quality, or lack of quality, to rattles in the dash, to rear hatch that had to be slammed to shut, to many other mechanical things wrong. My Lil Guy has never had one rattle, no mechanical issues, it's just been a very good car. And don't ask me what gas I use either, as I don't use the BMW recommended grade of gas.

'09 36k miles not a single problem. It may be noteworthy that my MINI is unmodified, unmolested, not tracked, driven reasonably. My emotions and self esteem are not invested in this car or in showing the world how fast and how wonderful a driver that I am. My car is carefully maintained and has thus far performed well. My usual answer to the perpetual thread on this forum -'what did you do to your MINI today?' is that I drove it and I washed the bugs off the windscreen.
No worries at all as long as the car is under warranty. Up until a few days ago I was undecided about keeping the car past then, but then it occurred to me that as long as I could get it covered until it's paid off I could just sock away a few payments' worth of cash after paying it off and that should cover just about anything that might break.
