CF hood scoop - would it look good and should I do it?

I am going to do the dealer later this week to discuss a replacement for my melted down hood scoop. One of the things I am considering is asking to let me pay the difference to get a CF hood scoop. So, I would like some opinions on whether or not you think it would look good on my MINI.

Here is the options:
1) Get a new OEM DS scoop
2) CF hood scoop
3) CF hood scoop with the stripes pulled off
4) CF scoop & mirror caps with stripes pulled off

All opinions are welcome because I cannot make up my mind on what will look the best. Thanks!

FYI: some dealers will do a straight swap as a "good will" gesture..
I accepted and like the look on my Pepper White.
I then bought a Pepper White scoop on the marketplace here in case I ever wish to switch back...

Here's mine, before and after. I like the look and think it looks great with the black stripes. If you can get it cheap because of the melted scoop, do it.

I guess it depends on whether you're trying to make the hood scoop stand out more or not.

Keep in mind that the CF scoops are just as susceptible to melting because they have the same clearcoat applied (which is usually what melts).

I would try to get them to give you some cash towards a better heat shield for the turbo.

Hmmm. The "melting" I've observed in the wild on R56's is actually more like "warping," i.e. nothing to do with the clearcoat, everything to do with the plastic disfiguring. In that case, the carbon fiber one should fix the problem and I've never heard otherwise. My all red JCW has the CF scoop and I think it adds a dash of panache to it without going overboard. I do tend to think that you can go too far with carbon fiber bits so I'd stop there. If the CF trend ever jumps the shark completely, I could paint mine to match.

When mine warped it was difficult to tell whether it was just the clearcoat or the plastic, but I was under the impression that it was usually just the clearcoat. I could be wrong.

I'd go with 5) CF scoop & mirror caps with stripes left on -- if you don't mind the expense. I would have like to go with a CF scoop, mirror caps, and boot light cover, but it was just too much $$$.

I notice that the blue on the scoop does not match the blue of the bonnet. This was the problem with my Pure Silver MCS. MINI paid to re-spray it at Autobahn Body Shop, but they wouldn't contribute to a CF scoop.

Looks good. I think it will be even better on silver.

Yeah, Laser Blue looks weird from different angles - sometimes my front and rear bumpers look like completely different shades of blue than the body. It's likely they were repainted in port (seems like a common occurrence), but from other angles everything looks perfect. Just something I've learned to live with.

Metalic paints are very difficult to match. The direction they are sprayed can affect how they look. However, in my case, the scoop had a purple tint and the bonnet was more towards green. I had to have some work done on the rear bumper at the same time. They found that they could not use the same mix of paint for the bumper as they used for the scoop. So, the bonnet didn't match the rear panels of the car. They suspected that the bonnet may have been resprayed at the factory or VDC.

Body color, but if you do go CF scoop, go stripeless. Its waaaay to busy up front with a scoop and stripes. Also if you go CF scoop I would also go with CF mirrors as just a scoop would look kinda weird IMO

i also have a Dark Silver MCS with bunch of Carbon Fiber bits (CF bonnet scoop, CF JCW spoiler). I would say it'll definitely look good on dark silver.

loadtoad,

as you can see opinions about what looks cool on a MINI really varies. That what makes em' so cool.

question really is-what do you like. If it's a CF scoop, do it

Really don't matter what I think or anybody else

That's the problem. I like all the combinations and can't really make up my mind. I know whichever way I go I can always go back to the way I had it before.

My plan for right now is to put the scoop on with the stripes. If I don't like it I might pull the stripes and add the mirror caps as well! Ah who knows what I will do...

Do you have any pictures so I can see it on a DS? Thanks!

Do it, and keep the stripes (in some form) a Cooper without stripes IMHO is just wrong.

Well I did it. The dealership ended up doing the CF hood scoop at no additional cost. I really like the way it looks and am happy with it.
Here are a couple of iPhone shots.

Oh - Thanks for all the opinions!
