R56 Hood Scoop Melt Down Resolution Question
Nope-would appear that MINI is getting tired of all the warranty claims finally
Yes my 08 does have the same thing however it still is now hot enough to start melting at almost 20000 miles.
My scoop isn't melting, but I did notice that it's changing colors. I hope I'm not crazy, but I was washing my car yesterday, and the scoop looks greenish (I have a Laser Blue car) when compared to the rest of the hood.
Do I need to get my eyes checked out?

Nope, but I am going home to North Dakota for a short visit in 2 weeks. N. Dak. is much more mountainous than Iowa! Ya, I be Norski.

PS: That black thingy under the hood (see other posts) is a OEM heat shield for the center of the hood, not for the scoop or water (?).
See it wanted to be BRG all along
and made it be blue..............
Poor Mini
I have just over 20K miles on my '08 MCS and I have the melting scoop issue. My concern even with a carbon replacement is the effect on the hood paint long term. I'm not a paint expert but it seems like sustained temps above 200 degrees F will eventually cause discoloration. I would hate to need a repaint in a few years because of a design that puts a 1000 degree F object inches underneath. Unless somebody can come up with a good engineering explanation against a shield, I think that's the way to go.
IMO Mini should look into something like the M7 heat shield

only in a stock form. I think if you really want to make sure you don't get discoloration or a melting hood scoop, this is the only way to go. Unfortunately its extremely expensive ($200) for what it is.

. BMW making a correction kit? Don't hold your breath. They never make an "engineering" mistake!
We installed the M7 heat shield on my wifes car about 2600 miles ago, so far so good. But when I recently showed her car to a well known, but not allowed on NAM anymore, gentleman, he instantly mentioned something like this:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TAY-02545/
This kind of material could be fastened to the underside of the R56 hood as a heat barrier. He said warping would never be a factor again
I havent done it yet as I have been preoccupied with my own Mini

The M7 shield has such a material on the bottom side.
I know, we have one. But if you still put your hand on it, its still very hot. The heat shield and this stuff together I think would be the fix. Not pretty, but functional
someone pics of melted scoops?? i changed mine last week and my dealer contacted the headquarters of mini to make them aware of this problem (of course unknown). after have changed the scoop on my april ´09 clubman he started to check out all the turbos coming in and recognized that nearly 90 % of them had melted scoops, so that he decided to do something - therefore he needs lots of pics which show off this prob - so if you can help, please let me know

- You can go with a carbon fiber scoop...if you like the look($$)
- You can install an aftermarket heat shield ($$$).
- You can have the dealer remove the warped scoop, paint and install you a new (supposedly improved) scoop.
- Or you can do nothing and try to ignore the problem. I couldn't do this and opted for the third option.
