Newbie question: hiss after shut down 09 JCW

First of all I've had the car for 26 hours! Totally in love!!! At first sight/drive really...

Ive done a few searches and I didn't find this question before, so forgive me if I simply missed it...

After I drive a while and shut down there seems to be a hiss coming from the turbo (up front anyway)

I'm still in the break-in period so I haven't spooled the turbo all that much. Revs may have slipped past 4500 a couple times.

Any idea what this is?
Normal?
I've never owned a forced induction vehicle. I am not ruling out the fact that I may just be a paranoid parent here, but I'd rather catch issues right away.

If I had to guess it sounds as if your hearing the water pump cooling the turbo after you turn the car off.

A cool turbo is a happy turbo. So it's a good noise!

Thanks for the info, and the quick reply!

Herman is right, the ECU runs an electric pump that circulates cooling water around the turbo to cool it off after the engine stops. It's why the MINI Owner's Manual doesn't mention any special instructions about idling the engine to cool down the turbo, the car does it automatically.

There's also some thumps you'll hear about 10 minutes after shut down from the fuel tank, that's from the fuel system adjusting itself and is perfectly normal.

Do you know exactly what it is doing though? I have always been curious as to what was actually being accomplished with the thuds.

I hadn't noticed a Thump yet... glad to hear this is normal when I do hear it.

On a side note, thanks for all your replies! A good sign of a great board/community is quick and correct answers. And a bonus, without any "Duh! It's normal you dumb NEWBIE!!! " attitude.

Keep up the good work!!!

You're thinking of the Hummer H2 forum . . . . MINI owners tend to be nice and happy.

I got a question that deals with this. Mine did that the other day, at first I thought it was the A/C. My question is this. When I went and test drove a Mini we stopped in a parking lot and changed drivers. I shut it off and the fan kept running for a little. My 2008 never does this. I was thinking it should do it for turbo cool down, but it just makes a hiss. Does anyones fan run after shutdown?

Fan runs

Yes my fan does run (sometimes) after shutdown. I bet it depends on the coolant temperature.
