When running the MCS with automatic on 87 or 91 instead of 93, is there any difference in MPG?

Don't know. Never tried going below 91(there's only 87,89 and 93 sold here-so I've not gone below 93 actually). I think my main concern would be more to do with a damaged engine versus mpg consideration. I'm sure there's Mini's who has been filled with 87 all their lives and been fine. However, the 20 cents difference is cheap insurance IMO. :P

Although, seeing as how diesel is only 20 cents more than premium here, I wish I had a Mini diesel and enjoy 60mpg. ;/

 

I think I would only use the recommeded fuel type. The longevity of the engine running trouble free would probably be in jeopardy.

I think premium is recommended.

The owners manual (for 09 at least) says no damage for 87 but performance my suffer. I have tried both in our non s clubman and really found little difference. The milage differences I have found seem to be more related to brand of fuel vs 87 or 93. But like was said above this a talked about a lot and some will say one thing some will say the other. MINI says 87 is ok so no harm in trying. My dealer said top tier fuel it more important than grade.

I have always used top tier gasolines with the recommended grade from the manufacturer. No worries this way.

Finally a meaningful reply.

 

I get better MPG's with 89 vs 93. I notice very little (if any) difference in performance. I would not use 87 in a MINI. It will run but will be sluggish.

Your recomended octain by the manufacture, (you know, the one that BUILT the car?!!!!) says to use 91 or higher!!!!!!

Why would you "think" you know more then the engineers? no really, why?
you may or may not notice a differance in mpg, but since your engines computer will be "retarding" the timing (such an appropiate word here!) the car will have less then desirable power!
All this to save a whopping $2.00 per fill up?
if you are that concerned about mpg you should have bought a prius!

I used either 95 or 100 octanes. I find that my MCS 2008 is more aggressive with the 100 and in my opinion more fuel efficient.

 

95-100! i wish we had that out here in AZ. the highest we have is 91...

 

Placebo effect.

 

Being cheap on the gas you put in your tank is like trying to be a body builder and only eating McDonalds, or buying a mansion and putting garage sale furniture in it...etc....etc...

 

2006 MCS with 24,000+ miles and ONLY 87 = 30 mpg overall average.
2008 MC with 10,000+ miles and ONLY 87 = 37 mpg overall average.
