My personal best... but not without getting caught

I drive from Brooksville, FL. (just outside Tampa) to Charlotte all the time to visit my parents. (well, parent, my dad passed away at Xmas)

Anyway, it was mom's birthday and I wanted to surprise her so I hauled my behind down there.

The trip usually takes 9 to 9 1/2 hours. Today I made it in 7 1/2. I've made the trip literally hundreds of times and have never gotten a ticket. That includes going through that God forsaken state of Georgia where the state symbol is an orange construction barrel where you really end up slowing down....lol.

Well, that was until today.

I was within 10 miles of getting home and I got busted.

I'm not upset, I just figured it was payback for all the times I didn't get caught.

The officer was nice, talked to me about my concealed weapon (which I do have a permit) and dropped my speed on the ticket to only 9 over.

Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Ya'll be safe.

Heh. I was ticket free for 8 years and then coming from FL back to GA one night I got pulled over for apparently going 23 over in my Elise. Sad thing that I was probably going 5-7 over and the sheriff shot some SUV that blew by me. Apparently Dooly county, GA is not the place you want to get a ticket at. None of the traffic lawyers wanted to touch the ticket because the judge there in about 25 years has never dropped or reduced a speeding ticket. $200 and 2 points later I'm much smarter and now Lotus-free. Hopefully the Clubman will be less of a bait.

Don't speed in Dooly county on I-75.

Edit - and yes, same question on the concealed carry - I didn't think that NC and FL have reciprocity.
Edit2 - yeah, you'll need separate permits for NC and FL+GA.

Suffice to say I had just slowed down from triple digits. I was driving with 2 other vehicles who were from another state and I was just thinking to myself how they need to slow down since this area was a known speedtrap.

Perhaps I should have heeded my own advice.

I usually carry an HK 40 USB but today I had my Ruger P95 with me.

Oh well, ya wanna play, ya gotta pay.

Actually, Georgia, North Carolina and Florida all have reciprocity with one another now.

I think some of the states have expanded their reciprocity agreements in the last 2-3 years. I used to not be able to carry concealed all the way from Virginia through Tennessee and Arkansas into Texas, but I can now.

Fortunately, when the officer wrote it up for only 9 miles over the limit, he said it was only an $81.50 fine.... had he written it up for my really speed, it was over $300 bucks.

The ironic part is, me and two other vehicles were playing tag all the way up from FL. He actually saw the SUV in front of me but since I was pretty well on his tail, I got busted.

Guess my plate didn't help things...

I use www.handgunlaw.us . You can click on any state and pull up all of their handgun and concealed-carry laws, including reciprocity information.

9 over? Geez man, I got popped on I-85 back in Nov and the @#$% wrote me up large. But he popped me at 83 in a 65....but I too was in a large pack. V1 never even blipped.

Took me several hundred with a good atty to get it down to nothingness.

Check FL regulations. NC is easy - 9 or less over is a NON moving violation, NO points, NO insurance hassle. Lucky dude. Sorry to hear about your pop. Hope Mom was happy to see you though.

Yeah, I was running a little over 100 and the radar went off. I hit the brakes and apparently when he clocked me, I was still doing 80.

It was still cool of him to drop it to 69 mph. It's in SC so I'm not sure what the penalties are as far as points.

Mom was thrilled to see me since it was her birthday and she wasn't expecting me. A ticket was well worth the price to see the smile on her face when I walked in the door to visit her.

My V1 saved me tonight on I485 but my buddy in his RX-8 wasn't as lucky a trooper sitting under the Rea Rd overpass nailed him at 101 in a 65. Poor guy his wife's gonna tear him a new one!

101 is bad. I was glad that I was lucky the times I ran out of gears on the Elise (~150ish).

Do the turbo MINIs have a tendency to get you carried away? I sure hope to stay within 15 over for a while now.

It's ironic. Usually when ya get pulled, you'll drive nice and obey the speed limit for at least a few weeks.

I got off I-485 on lawyers road and started heading home. I saw a car coming towards me and my radar detector went off. The car behind the car coming towards me was a sheriff followed by a Mint Hill police car. I looked down at my speedo and was doing 63 in a 45.

Luckily I was about to pull into my street so I was just hitting the brakes.

I think part of my problem (other than a heavy foot....lol) is I've been driving my H2 for the last month or so and this is literally the first time I've driven the Mini in that time. After driving the H2, the mini just seems to fly in comparison.

Not only a turbo but with the JCW stage I kit installed, the car really wants to fly.

I'm not just saying that, I mean if I'm just driving along cruising, I can look down and almost bet that my speedometer is on 89mph. I'm not sure why but that is the sweet spot and it's just not me, I've had friends drive my car and they tell me that they were cruising down the highway and looked down and were at 90mph.

It's so simple to run 95-100 without even knowing it. The car is smooth and responsive and at those rpms, you can bump it up a notch just by bumping the shifter into 5th gear. (automatic)

The biggest players are the Valentine and Passport X50. I've tried the V1 and didn't like it. Lots of false alerts, bulky but does have directional indication. (though I could care less if the radar is coming from front or back)

No offense to those that have the V1 but I've got 3 passport X50 detectors.

I wouldn't drive without one. Though I got busted tonight, I promise you that my detectors have paid for themselves time and time and time over.

This is my first ticket in probably 15 years and I wouldn't drive without a detector.

Of course, it would be cheaper just to follow the speed limit but who wants to spend an extra couple of hours driving...lol.

Seriously, if you get one, don't think that a detector gives you the right to speed. You've got to use common sense and learn to "read" the detector. So many people think just because they have one, they can speed without regard of getting busted.

Good luck.

A 'JustaCooper' does the same thing, she smooths out at about 65, but is on a cloud @ 75+.

I've passed people doing 90, got Lucky too, I snuck back in line just in time to see a Sheriff coming from the opposite direction. Yep' I puckered!!

HA HA, Mark, you silly azz! Sorry to hear ya got stopped. About as bad as my kid that's in Charlotte. He was headed up to NJ for a food network competition last year, and got pulled in VA of all places for 85 in a 65. I've been lucky for too long now, guess my time will come eventually. Of course the F250 and the Jeep Wrangler help slow me down. It's the Orange Z28 and the Clubbie that I have to watch out for while driving.

All in all, it couldda been worse huh? Congrats on that anyway. And by the way, I like Brooksville, nice little town down there.

You'll have to check your state but I know there are only a few states that don't allow radar detector. One being Virginia.

I think the X50's run about 399 for the blue and 349 for the red LED's.

You can find used ones fairly cheap on ebay in good condition.

Check out the reviews from this independent site. Radar

Here is a brief rundown found on google. You'll have to check for more accurate info.

Radar detectors are banned in Virginia.
Radar detectors and radar jammers are illegal in the District of Columbia.
Radar jammers are illegal in Oklahoma, but radar detectors are legal.
In New York, radar detectors are illegal for commercial vehicles over 18,000lbs.
In IIlinois, radar detectors are only regulated in commercial vehicles. </SPAN itxtvisited="1">

Yup, my dumbazz.... I deserve it. Hate that I got one but it's no one's fault but my own. Guess if I didn't want a ticket, I just had to slow down...

Seems simple....

Damn, I said if you wanna play, you gotta pay.... but damn, I just looked up points. Driving 10mph or less in a speed limit of 55 or more is 2 insurance points equalling a 45% increase in rates?

God, I hope not. I'm paying for an '06 H2, '08 Mini, '08 Jeep, '05 Jeep, '96 S10, '00 Plymouth Prowler and an '82 elcamino.

That could hurt my wallet.

Watcha gonna do?

Was that information coming from your insurance company, because I know that different companies handle the situation differently. My rates don't go up when I get tickets, even though Virginia is a "points" state.

In fact, when I told my insurance agent about my last speeding ticket, he laughed and told me "you would have to run over a bunch of nuns, while drunk, before we'd raise your rates for a moving violation".
