MINI Cooper S vs. VW Scirocco Fifth Gear

09 R56 Cooper S Stock VS 09 VW New Scirocco

http://fifthgear.five.tv/jsp/5gmain....per+S+Dogfight

VW Scirocco is essentially a 2 door MK VI GTI with adaptive damper like the new Audi TT && Ferrari 599 GTB: a stiffer, lower, wider, lighter GTI with more grip + trick damper. Enjoy!

I love watching those guys, great find Nick.

I had no idea the MINI would hold up so well. Six Hundreths (0.06) seconds slower lap time is extremely impressive.

They pick a winner at the end based solely on the lap time (and they are very close). But when you also consider real-world factors, I'd rather get the lighter car with less HP, as it is likely to feature a better MPG rating (cheaper to run) and shorter stopping distance (safer to drive).

I really dislike runs like these. At least they rode with each other, but it would've been better to have the same driver on each vehicle, and particularly a trained driver (both were too busy fooling around). I guess it's the mythbusters of the automotive world. No scientific rigor, but fun to watch.

I'd agree with the first part, but braking distance is also dependent on tires and the brakes themselves, so depending on what the Scirocco is shod with, it might brake substantially better than the MINI (As an extreme example, the new 370 Z is substantially heavier by several hundred pounds than a MINI, but outbrakes it from 60-0 by 20 feet). The MINI's brakes are good, but not otherworldly...

"These may look like cars for men who self-tan and trim their eyebrows" I love british car shows, I really do!

I'm also one to say I would have loved to see what Tiff could have done had he driven the MINI as he's well known as the handling king. There are so many variables to consider but considering the 0-60 time of the Scirocco with DSG is quicker than its manual brethren, the MINI would have beaten a 6spd Scirocco.

Thanks for the clip! I really like the looks of the Scirocco and it is certainly more aggressive and the flowing than the GTI. I thought the concept of making a "prettier" version of the same car to be pointless, however I've changed my tune as I like the Scirocco a lot and when we had our little international auto-show in Boston this fall, everyone in my group was very impressed with the "CC" redesign of the Passat.

great find, love these shows, but cant help thinking that the .07 second difference could so easily have gone towards the MINI with only a slight hesitation of a thumb

who cares though, im sure the MINI is slightly more exciting to drive, which is the true importance.

Fut to watch, but what's with the stopwatch? Why not pay a couple hundred dollars for a real lap timing rig?

Little confusion here. I believe the video stated that MCS does 0-60 in 7.1 seconds. Mini USA says 6.7

Is the Euro spec slower or is Mini USA over optimistic?

Haha, many errors in that video. Main ones being:

1. They weren't being serious. I mean come on, they were joking around half the time.

2. Stopwatch? Again, how accurate can that be? + - 2 seconds, I'd reckon.

3. Different drivers. I'm darned sure that the old man is a more experienced driver than the young chap. The young guy looked freaked out when the old man would pull some wicked turns, and he also didn't look as confident when motoring.

I'd like a real comparison, but I'm sure the Scirocco would pull ahead of the MINI. It is far above it's price range. The JCW would be a proper match.

Just wondering.... does anyone know what that VW might sell for if it came to the US?

I love my Mini but I might have seriously considered this car if it was available when I bought my car last year.... It is MUCH better looking than the GTI !!

That's what I was trying to ask in post 14. According to this it will be in high 30's and I was wondering if it does laundry for that price? I mean it looks like a GTI replacement why such a huge jump in price.

[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif][SIZE=2]2010 Volkswagen Scirocco Prices: The Scirocco's U.S. price will largely depend on standard content, and VW has yet to provide a final answer on that. Other unknowns include commodity price trends and dollar/euro exchange fluctuations. Despite this murky mix, we'd guess the base sticker here would be about the same as it is over there: $38,000-$39,000. That would make for another VW that looks expensive to American eyes, although that might be somewhat offset by the full-house standard equipment that VW is apparently mulling.

As far as I know, the prices in Euros NEVER directly transfers to prices in the US. If you look at how much a base MINI is in England, 16500 pounds, is equal to 21K dollars.

The main reason the Scirroco has yet to be approved for the USA is because VW is affraid, (and rightly so), to cannibalize GTI sales. They're essentially the same car, except the GTI is taller, and consequently weighs more.

I think they should bring the Scirroco stateside, but give it a performance advantage compared to the GTI. It should be the fastest car VW sells.
