And if ya think 9000 RPM is high, consider Formula 1 race car engines, 18000 to 19000 RPM. But they don't use springs to open and close the intake and exhaust valves.

Ah, I wonder what the MINI would sound like at 18000rpm.

It shouldn't be bad at ALL to bounce off the rev limiter. That is why it is there. I haven't done it yet, heck, I don't know how in my automatic!

You could be cruising at 85mph and hit the down-paddle fifty times and the transmission will not go lower than it is allowed to do. The computer is completely capable of handling thousands or even millions of commands in a second.... unless MINI put in computers from the 1970s... I would not be surprised!

As long as it doesn't sound like those horrid Honda Civic rev limiters, I'd say you'd be fine. Don't do it constantly though... don't know why you would... it looks kind of silly.

Kind of like this....

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.....WAA...WAAAAA...cough cough...puke...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..... (sounds of small and large bits of metal bouncing on pavement)....... (sound of liquid dripping into puddle under car).... (sound of sobbing from moronic driver who tried to rev his engine to 18000rpm).... (sounds of "friends'" derisive laughter)....

How do I know this sound, you ask?

So many bad memories.... oh the pain.... and the smoke...

Anyway, I don't recommend bouncing any engine off its' limiter on purpose, based on my own experience which I won't go into right now... (sound of quiet sobbing)....

Probably very similar to the sound of you going back to your Mini dealer and getting another one.

Did someone really just tried to compare a Mini engine and an F1 engine? really? Did this just become a honda board or what?

no really?

The OP has an auto so no red zone to rev into. As for bouncing of the rev limiter I've done it with mine several times a day for almost 70k now and had no issues whatsoever.

You'd not get the engine much past 7500rpm before it destroyed itself.

People you cant rev past the limiter......not possible. Its a factory setting, thats why its there so you don't have to worry about what happens if you over rev the motor....if your bumping off the limiter your still in the safe zone.

Hmmm... and the red zone is like 7-8k RPMs... even though the actual red zone sounds like it is 5.5k-6.5k, eh?
I have inadvertently hit the rev limiter. The engine just stops pulling, but comes back on as soon as the rpms drop back to the operating zone.

It happened when I was accelerating into traffic. The momentary 'stall' was an eye opener.

First of all p'raps you should read my post closely. I did not compare a Mini engine with a F1 engine. And what does F1 have to do with Honda other than the fact it is/was one of the 10 F1 teams? There is no comparison between a Mini engine and a F1 engine. The only closely comparable thing is that they are both internal combustion engines.

True, and no matter how quickly you reach the rev limiter, your engine cannot exceed the set limit (disregarding botched downshift or similar engine braking). I was pulling my hair out a while ago in another thread where a poster swore up and down that an engine could continue to accelerate past the rev limit even after the fuel/spark was cut off if it had enough momentum.

Well let's face it Scott, there are those who are fairly well educated in the area of the automobile's mechanical functions and those who only know how to put the key in the slot, start the car and drive. But then again, we all were pretty ignorant of those functions in our younger days.

Alright, I tried to get the engine to over-rev in my automatic today and have determined it to be impossible. Even in full manual (stick to the left), it won't do anything. They call it an "automatic" for a reason!

Jeez, my 88 BMW 325i had a rev limiter. It's not a new thing.

So does my aunt's old 1981 Tercel (which I learned standard on). Or maybe it just can't get the RPMs high enough to hit the limiter.

My '89 GMC doesn't need one. Has absolutely no power over 4500 rpm (never had).

True....The word "REV Limiter" should be all it takes to explain it...
