R56 CVT in 6th gear.
CVT in 6th gear.
OK. The engine rpm is too high in the sixth gear when cruising on the freeway. But everyone likes that downshifting is not a must when passing at 60 mph. A perfect solution would be to make the 6th gear a CVT gear. Within the 6th gear there will be a small range of continuously variable transmission ratio. So when you need more torque to accelerate the 6th gear CVT will be just above the 5th gear but when you are just cruising it will be have the ratio comparable to a 7th or even 8th gear!!
I'm not the mech-savviest of car owners, but wouldn't that essentially require two transmissions? Would a hybrid-geared/CVT transmission be possible?
Cool idea though. Never stop dreaming.
