Click, Click, Click sound..very nervous!

Yesterday after washing my car, started the engine and I heard loud click click sound in the engine. Press gas pedal and the click click sound rapidly increase. Freaked out, shut off the engine, opened the hood, checked the oil....every thing fine. Re-started the engine and it sounded fine and drove fine.
Any one got the same problem and know any idea what caused it?
thanks.

Did you wash the engine bay with high pressure water? I've made this mistake in my younger days... the vehicle didn't start, and when it did, it sounded rough.... but only briefly.

Noegel...wow....like u read my mind. I did use the pressure washer, pointed directly to the front grill (not on the paint). Is this the "engine bay" u're talking about? If it is....coopers owners take note :-)

thanks, this made me feel better.

I've had that happen after washing my Saab.

Anyone know what exactly is happening? Are you getting your starter wet? Like getting a lighter wet - then you have to strike it a few times to get it to igninte?

Any one else have this problem? (the starter getting wet and failing?)

Does it completly fail or work after a while? I think my friend is running in to this problem.

TIA

I had this same problem just this morning. When starting and backing out of my garage, I got a similar noise, it scared the hell out of me. The tope end started making a lot of clicking noises and when revving up to pull out it was accompanied my something else vibrating, probably from the clicking.
It was definately a top end engine noise, like the valve train wasn't getting any oil. It continued until I turned off the engine, I checked under the bonnet and checked the oil, which was good, couldn't see anything wrong.
I restarted the engine and the noise was gone.

Thats why I came here, to see if anyone else has had this happen.
I have 4800 miles on it, never anything like it before.
I didn't wash it, just pulled out of my garage, no water involved.

Any ideas?
Pint

Could it be the dreaded cold start chatter/clatter?

I've been monitoring this for a long time, because I'm almost ready to order an 09 MCS. I emailed a local MA who assured me they had never seen this at their shop. But to keep reading posts about odd noises from the valve train suggests to me that MINI still hasn't fixed this. I'm sorry to hear of your troubles

If there's one word that I could never imagine using to describe the cold start noise, it's "click"

Well, yes, you have a good point. But pintofhooky's wording "It was definitely a top end engine noise, like the valve train wasn't getting any oil" made me wonder if it wasn't something more than just clicking. BTW I exchanged a few emails with MINI USA today, asking about the cold start issue, and they won't discuss it because the sites that document it so clearly "are not endorsed by MINI USA." No kidding. My apologies if this looks like a thread hi-jack... certainly not my intention... just seeking clarity.
