R56 Anyone other then me hit R at a stop light :)
Done it a couple of times right after I got my MINI.
I'm so accustomed to my MINI now that the other day I borrowed my son's S-10 and almost put the truck in reverse at highway speed thinking i had one more gear (6th).
That woulda made some noise!!!!
Ha! I almost did that with my Dad's S10 once. Had the clutch halfway down at ~65 before I realized what I was about to do. Of course, when he's driven my MINI, he's tried to back up using 6th, but that's much less likely to cause serious damage.
I've done it once. (P.S. I think this is probably applicable to both 1st gen and 2nd gen owners...)
Don't most five-speed gearboxes with the usual shift pattern have a lockout from 5th to reverse? With my old 2000 Sentra, you could only enter reverse from neutral, not directly from 5th.

did it 3 times with my lone-gone R53. hated the location of reverse to the point it was one factor in my decision to forego the manual in favor of the automatic for my R56. impossible to go into R using paddles...

When I first got a six speed first and reverse was a little random, so I'd advise people not to stand in front of or behind me while I starting up. I got used to it pretty quickly, I don't think I've had any trouble with that for 3 years now.
My wife had a bit of trouble find reverse at all, my advise was to slap it a bit to get across the gate, she does fine now.

Something like that shortly after getting the car. I needed to downshift into 1st quickly with a car on my tail. In my hurry, I overcame the lockout resistance and went into Reverse. That made me very aware of the issue. My previous car had Reverse to the right and down.
My father once tried to shift my '57 Alfa Spider from 4th into Reverse at 65 mph. Polished the tops of the gears with that one. Made quite a noise. Fortunately, didn't get it engaged.

I was driving my partner's Tacoma last night and slammed on the brakes (trying to use the clutch to change gears, in his automatic). "What the hell???", he said. My reply... "you should have a manual... and a manual Mini at that."
When stopped at a light with the car out of gear, if I am daydreaming and all of a sudden everyone starts to move, sometimes I try to shift into first too quickly and I can feel that I've caught reverse instead. It must be disconcerting to the car behind me.
I have always felt it before letting the clutch out and corrected it. There really should be more of a downward push or effort required to engage reverse.

I don't own mine yet, but I'm am not happy with the lack of a reverse lockout. On other cars I looked at, all the cars had a good reverse lockout on them. The Mazdaspeed3 shifter had to pushed down hard to get into reverse, and the Cobalt SS needed a small ring to be lifted up. With the Mini, it's just a bit of resistance. Good news is, if you do try to shift into reverse, it more than likely will not go in, and will instead grind a bit.
I only did it once...when I was test driving my friend's 5spd MC. I was so used to driving my 6spd MCS. (I also try to shift in my F150...and the shift is auto on the column, too.)
Only once at a stoplight I actually got reverse and started going backwards when it turned green. Once in a while I'll hit it a little too hard and go too far, but I know it immediately and just let it back to neutral and then 1st. Always when I'm in a hurry and grab the shifter instead of just push it with my palm.
Did it once as well, and only once. Driving to work the 2nd day I had her. Was at a red light and almost hit the guy behind me. He was real nice about it though, he only honked once and gave me the finger. Real nice guy!!!
I have never done it at a stop light because I always check to make sure that I'm in first and not third or fifth (which I have done).
But there was one time when I was backing out of my garage and instead of the garage door opening getting closer it kept getting further away from me...
At least I did'nt go through my garage door like my neighbor that thought she had it in reverse and plowed right into her garage door.
