How many miles on your car? It may make sense to change it at about 80k. It may not be a DIY job as the transmission oil may need to be at a certain temp or other such things. You might want to explore other vehicles that use this Aisin Tranmission to see what technical info is out there. BMW/MINI is VERY secretive and withholding of information. My 07 MCA has only 13k miles. Changing the trans oil is not un me immediate agenda but it is lurking outthere. Good luck andlet us know what you find out.

Think the OM calls for Automatic Transmission Service at 100k.

Some shops do a "Flush'n Fill", probably using Transmission Cooler Lines.

My Chrysler had no drain plug, you dropped the pan and changed the filter.

You would replace (through dipstick hole with MoPar ATF) the fluid that came out with the pan removal,
but half of the fluid would remain inside Torque Converter.

Tranny fluid DIY is one of the reasons I ordered a manual this time around.
I have done auto tranny chane at home on a Z3 and MDX. Not fun..

IMHO transmission fluid (manual or auto) should be changed every 30K miles if you want the transmission to last. BMW, MINI and other manufactures that have lifetime fill is for the lifetime of the transmission not the lifetime of the car. The dealer or an independent BMW shop (www.bimrs.org) can likely do the change. There are not a lot of independent MINI repair shops but if you do a search in NAM you may find one in your area. I would not take it to a "Quicky Lube" for transmission oil change. The dealer will use MINI fluid. If you choose an independent ask what fluid they are using. It should be MINI fluid or other premium fluid e.g. Redline.

Heres a pic of the fill plug(circled in red) on the auto tranny. It will require taking off the air cleaner assembly. The drain plug is easy to see on the underside next to the big "lifetime fluid" sticker.

The factory service interval for the R56 to replace the auto trans fluid is 100K per the Mini Cooper service booklet.Obviously that is the owner responsibility so change it when you feel the need to or when you had changed the auto trans fluid on your past vehicles. But like others have mentioned use auto trans fluid designed for the Mini Cooper.

so did anyone loosen that fill plug?

will be changing soon, but did anyone try filling fluid in that plug yet? There should be two fill plugs on both sides. So in that picture on the right of the seam, better to get to from below there is another 8mm fill plug.

best bet is to measure what comes out and then replace.
