R56 long term reliability?
In the travel forum, you will find several threads on cars that are passing 100,000 miles. The owners of those cars are detailing their quirks and flaws in those threads and I highly recommend reading them. There is one guy in there who has a car that is at 157,000 miles with no major problems.

I don't thin you will see too many high-mileage R56 out there yet. They of only been on the road since 02/07 here in the states and only a few months older overseas. I think the reliability should be even better on the R56's since the build quality seems to be improved over the first generation.
Flav, while I see your point, because the 2007 and later cars are completely different other than exterior similarities, but it's honestly the best answer to the question I (or anyone else) can give.
In terms of reliability on a MINI over the long term, there really are no numbers that can give you an adequate prediction of the lifespan of the vehicle because they haven't even been in production for a decade yet. The new MINI is too young of a car for anyone to get an idea of how well they perform. Also, there are other factors to take into account, such as weather the maintenance schedule was followed properly on the vehicle... etc.
Still the reliability of the older cars should give you a general idea of the quality of the builds, regardless of components used, and attention to detail with regard to how the cars were designed.

I've made it to 17k with:

Replaced Flywheel/ throwout bearing (@ 800 miles) (loud clacking coming from transmission when in neutral)
Replaced Clutch (@ 1000 miles) (3-2 squeal)
Scketchy water pump (@ 5000 miles) (whinning intermitantly)
I still love my MINI, and it's currently running like a champ
