Fuel Economy Personal Best

I just did a personal best: 51.55 mpg actual
Rolling country hills commute.
One trip on rolling hills, ~200 miles.
No long, slow flat interstate trip.

Fuel: Citgo Premium (93)
Fuel Amt: 14.201 gal, US
OD: 8,411 miles
Trip OD: 732.1 miles

OBC: 53.4 mpg, 34.6 mph

Cooper R56 Coupe 6 Speed

It was really cool to go over 50 mpg!

I did one trip of 200 miles, part rural highway (cruise set at 55), part interstate (cruise set at 65). Round trip mpg was OBC 49.7 mpg, by refill 46.5 mpg. No AC, 93 octane shell. That is about routine for me. I traditionally get around 35-39 around town, depending upon amount of freeway vs stop and go. Last tank around town was 39.7 by refill. It seems to be up a couple of miles from last summer when the car was new and definitely better than the winter months where I seemed to lose a mpg or two.

What's the general consensus on here, are we trusting of the on-board computer when it comes to working calculating the mpg? I am - but I know there are a lot of cynics around here with regards to other things like oil changes

OBC almost always reads 1-2mpg higher than actual. Filled the wife's '08 MCS up last night... 380.5mi on 11.678 gallons or 32.5mpg. OBC read 34.5mpg (I reset it on every fillup).

But how are you measuring accurately?

Pump the same way each time, ie, one click, two clicks, etc.
The exact gallons is on the receipt.

So you are assuming the pump is accurate?

if you fill the car to full every time, then when you fill up just divide your miles by the number of gallons it takes to fill back to full.

Bah. I'm out there to motor. Not going to pay attention to something as trivial as gas mileage. I'm going to enjoy my trip and if I happen to get good mileage at the same time, so be it. If not, hey, I've still got the grin.

That said... best I've gotten was: R50, 41mpg actual, 90% highway, 93 Octane BP.

How do you reset the mpg reading?

you use the little button on the turn signal to switch your computer screens until you get to the screen that you want to reset and then you just hold down the little button until it goes back to zero

Or you call up the computer display, press the button under the MPG display, then press reset on the next screen. (Then press the bendy arrow button to get back again.)

I know everybody has a different idea of what is fun. I have seen you post quite a few times about high MPG. High MPG is great but do ever actually have any fun driving? Are you shifting all the time at 2000 to 2500 rpm? These small engines are made to rev. I don't think it is a good idea to constantly shift at low rpm or lug the engine. It is great to get good MPG but down the road you may find you have an engine with excessive carbon build up and sludge.

It's easy to get great gas mileage with these cars but you have to have fun once and a while also.

I'm with you, Velvet... I think it's great fun to see how many mpgs we can get (without inconveniencing other motorists or being a hazard, of course). My best tank so far (R56/6spd) was 45.3 (hand calculated), and worst was 36 (OBC). I LOVE going over 500 miles before even thinking about finding a gas station! Of course, all that conservation makes it even more fun to wind the engine up from time to time!

Please share your secrets!
