What the bloody hell

this is only my second day with the cooper.
already something is awry.
my trunk won't latch anymore. i've pushed it and
slammed it as hard as i could without doing any
damage, and the trunk just refuses to latch. this
isnt cool. i drove it around to see if it would open
while driving, and it only opens if i either hit a big
bump or if i accelerate very hard. plan on taking it
right back to the dealer on monday. but in the meantime
i was wondering if anyone has had this experience and
if it can be fixed @ home? thanks guys.

I haven't had that happen, but don't get too bummed. I'm sure it's just an adjustment and the dealer will take care of it. The second day I had mine the check engine light came on and wouldn't go off. Turned out to be the variable valve timing controller that had to be replaced. Dealer fixed it, then threw in bonnet stripes for my trouble. Been absolutely problem free ever since.

And congrats on the new ride. Your color and options are almost exactly what I've got planned for myself for the next time around!

Look at it and see if the latch is in the open position.

Experienced the same problem

A couple of weeks of owning my '08 MCSa and my hatch refused to lock.I tried everything but still it would not lock.I had to drive to the dealership with it open and was pulled over by the police because the license plate is on the hatch part of the car.I explained that I was on the way to the MINI dealership service dept. to get it fixed so he let me go.

Turned out it was a faulty lock mechanism which they happened to have in stock and hasn't happened since.

Some others on NAM have had the same problem too.

you don't think they'd charge me anything for it right?
it'd be absurd if they did.

The problem you speak of is probably slightly diffferent, but many of us had to tweak the little rubber stops on either side of the inside boot hatch. This let the lock engage more effectively. They just twist.

Either way, if it's possible I'd let the dealer adjust it. It's a new car and very easy for them to diagnose exactly what is amiss and dial it in so you'll never have to think about it ever again. And it costs nothing...nada. I've had superb experiences with the MINI warranty...and many of these cars need a little sorting out once they're on the road. With your input, the car can be perfect. Mine is!!!

Bummer something's wrong with the latch, but it sounds like the dealer can quickly fix it. And with any luck, maybe he'll give you something for the trouble.

Latches aren't too complicated...see if you can manually turn it to the open position and then close so it hooks. This might just be a temporary solution depending on why it is doing it though.

I hope I don't have any of these nit-noid problems right after I get mine (or ever, for that matter) what with the closest dealership being over 5 hours away.

Nothing like burning two tankfuls of gas for such a (necessary) nuisance.

If you pull up on the opening latch(directly above license plate) while the boot is open the lock mechanism will click and then you can close the boot.

When you use your fob to open the boot it will pop up and the locking mechanism will re-lock leaving the boot open preventing you from accidently closing the boot(hand slipping...) therefore you need to depress the electronic handle(under the lip above the license plate).

Off topic, but Red Dragoon, where did you get the sunroof graphics? Is that one piece or is each square separate? Is the sunroof still usable? Looks great!
