Having 2nd thoughts... looking for advice, Ex BMW/335 owners especially
Hey everybody!!
Patiently waiting for my loaded LiB/White..put the order in 2 weeks ago and everything is going as planned (er..except for the plant shutdown). So here is my dilemna:
I am currently leasing a silver E90 335 sport..my baby..I special ordered it. Usually I will get a new car every 10-12 months, but this time I didn't try to get out of it..I love driving it, etc..you know.
So i have 6 months left on the lease, planned on getting an MCS as my next car..but now I'm not sure I want to give it up. It is fast, handles well, looks good, great stereo..not a single issue in 17,000 miles. Problem is, if I buy out my lease at the end of the year and then want OUT 6 mo later I am screwed because I will be very upside down. Also..the 3 times I drove the MCS I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face. So it has the fun factor..what happens when that wears off, am I going to seriously regret dropping the 335?
I guess what I'm looking for is did anyone get rid of a car they absolutely loved and how do you feel about it now? I want to keep this next car at least 3+ years because we are saving for a bigger place..so i won't really be able to get out of anything..so I need to do it right.
No I do not want a 1 series..my budget is low 30's..so it's between my MCS and 335. I really don't know what to do..
Wondering what you think??
Thanks,
Dave

Here is what mine would look like (hope the owner doesn't mind..beautiful car)

mmm def,
I can help, sort of... I am a current owner of your twin car. Special ordered with sport pkg. I also have a MCS on order... but that is where the compatibility stops. I cannot part with this 335i.
I have owned a handful of exotic sports cars (MG, Corvette, Porsche, Audi) and many other "nicely built cars" but no car has ever impressed me the way this E90 TT does. It's crazy quick and insanely fast. 4 door sleeper. This is my 4th BMW and a keeper for awhile. I can't imagine a MCS filling any voids from parting with your 335i. Please be careful thinking that.
I'm buying a MCS as a daily driver so I can park my JGC Overland except for the the weekend trips and Home Depot runs. Have you considered buying a MCS not-so-loaded to keep both? Mine is coming in just over $22k with Conv Pkg and Xenons. I'm sure the non-S would be well under $20k.
Well, my .02, I do wish you the best with the decision. If you decide to part with the 335 I give you a week before your first bout' of depression. Call me and I"ll give ya a ride

I currently have a 2001 530ia Sport. Not the same car as your e90 but still a lot of fun to drive. I'll drive the 530 when I need something bigger.
I agree with that if you can pare down your Mini you can have the best of both worlds!

Hey! That's my car! (No, I don't mind
)
But, this decision comes down to you. Can you live with a small car? Can you live without all that power? The MCS saves on gas, but in the end, it's just a car, as is the 335.
From personal experience, I don't really miss my old car, even though it was reliable, had gobs of power, and was really safe to boot. While I owned it, it was a very personal experience. Made a lot of good friends because of it (similar interests and whatnot), but after selling it to get my MINI, I just sort of let it go.

I dropped my e90 for a MCS. I love my MCS. Don't miss the e90 at all. I do miss my e46 though...
I got my e90 via european delivery and hated it from the moment I pulled away from delivery center in Munich. I tried to like for a year but the car was, for me, boring. At 140+ the car was serene, stable and bland.

I agree, the Mini is no 335i... If you can have both then you'll be ok, but otherwise you'll kick yourself if you expect the MCS to come anywhere close to the 335i, it's just a different animal all together...
I was in a similar situation as you. Moved into a new house, I owned a 2008 E92 335 and decided to let it go in hopes to free up some money as i felt i didn't really need such an expensive, powerful car just as a DD.
As the poster above me stated the MCS wont come anywhere close to the 335i. I have to say i respectfully disagree, sure the 335 has tons more power and is one for fastest cars you can buy right now in its price range, and even higher. But the car feels so, sterile for lack of better word. The MCS just IMO is such a good little package, you can clearly tell your driving a little FWD BMW. Im shocked to say this, but i really dont miss my 335 at all. Maybe im just crazy

I have to say there is always something new and better around the corner. I learned a few years ago car love is very stupid, because no matter how much you enjoy it, it will always get old, and you will always eventually have to get rid of it, and it will always bring you pain in the end. On the other hand car lust (which never last more than a year or two) is way more exciting, and best part about it, there is always something new to lust after around the corner, so the feeling ultimately never dies (as long as you can afford it). Don't look back its just a car, although sometimes I wish we could be the same way with women.
Update: Been having the toughest time deciding, so today I went and took a 4th!!! test drive in the MCS. I made my decision.. I am going to go through with the order..the car is just too much fun. Now I know the 335 will blow the MCS out of the water in a straight line...but back to back the MCS really scoots (yes I love to use that word) and I was really impressed with the low end power and also the midrange..it moves out very nicely. I do have a TBE and Alta ECU planned for it to make up some of the power difference, but even stock it is real nice.
The main factor for my decision is the handling..I just cannot get over how well this thing handles!! The MCS weights maybe 150 lbs more than my Honda Fit..but feels twice as solid on the road..amazing!!!
I spent some time today at Porsche looking at the Boxster/Cayman, took a walk over to Audi to look at the S4 (I have driven them before..those are all amazing cars)..but I just can't justify spending that kind of $ when I can have so much fun in the Mini.
Anyway, I am SUPER excited and can't wait to get the car. It should have finished production today.
Big thanks to the kind folks at Prestige Mini (Dan & Jessica) and Adam at Alta Mini..gave me some very good advice and took a good 20 minutes out of his busy day to listen to my sob story..also a big thanks to all of you here..what an awesome Community!

I have an E92 335i and will be taking delivery of an MCS for my wife here in July. I have honestly been thinking of selling the 335 and getting a base MCS for me and modding it for better handling and a little more power. Don't get me wrong...I love the 335i and always get compliments on it, but I don't need it as a DD.
If you think the Mini handles well try a mid-engined car like the boxster or cayman (An older Ferrari without power-steering will give you the go-kart feeling to the extreme). The front mounted engine really upsets the balance of the car (tho you may prefer the way the Mini handles). Mid mounted (whether behind the front axel or in front of the rear) RWD cars are the benchmark of handling.
I know OP doesn't want a 1er but it handles great (quick turn in, super stable at speed), has more headroom than a 3er, has more cargo capacity than an R56, and with TT is an absolute rocket ship. I was less impressed with the 335 than the 135.
I like the personalization factor of the Mini. All BMWs seem like just another bimmer while each Mini seems unique.

Pretty much same exact situation as me. I love the E92 335 to death, by far fastest car ive ever owned, but as a DD i just simply didnt need it, and with the price of gas and payments of the car, going to the MINI was a great choice for me. I honestly dont miss the 335i at all. Well, maybe a little bit, but overall i think the overall size of the car takes some of the fun away. 135 im sure is an absolute blast.
I haven't personally owned a 335, but I have owned 7 BMWs and just ordered what will be my fourth MINI.
I also have been co-driving my friend's E90 at a few local autocrosses.
My favorite BMWs were the E30s and the E36/5s and E36/7s, meaning the BMWs with less sophisticated semi trailing arm rear suspension setup. I find that the MINIs capture a lot of that feeling, but in a car that actually is quicker and more stable in most instances.
I wouldn't trade any of my MINIs for the E90 I've been autocrossing. It feels big and heavy (probably because it is!) and doesn't have much of a personality.
