R56 It actually does get 40MPG!!!
At 75mph with the ac on and cruise on a flat road, I can get 39-40mpg.
I drove almost 1500 miles at an average speed of 83.7 (according to the little average mph in the computer...many times I was 95+) and still averaged 33.4 mpg on an S.
I got back today from Savanah, GA to Charlotte, NC in 3 hours and 15 minutes. I didn't check my average but I was running 95'ish most of the time and still averaged 30.7 mpg.
Hell, beating the car for 2 days on the track with the throttle in either all the way up or all the way down and the tank I used averaged 22.7 mpg.
I like it...

My friends have a 2008 Prius. Highway only driving isn't that impressive. They usually average 40-45 on the highway (road trips). Once those batteries drop to a certain voltage, the gas engine starts to allow charging. Now you're just carrying around heavy cargo (batteries) with a regular gas engine. Still, 40 is good, but many cars get that on the highway. My 17 year old Sentra still gets 42 highway, 36 mixed city/highway.
Romi will average about 30 to 32 MPG per tank, for my normal driving, which is mostly a 2.5 mile commute to work, at not higher than 40MPH with 8 traffic lights involved. Lots of stop and go. in heavy traffic, for such a short commute.
On the highway, she will get 41 to 43 MPG @ 70MPH, depending on the wind. The worst highway mileage she has gotten was just over 40MPG and that was due to bucking a headwind, uphill at around 75MPH.

On average I get around 35 - 37 on the Highway, and that is at speed. For example yesterday I drove 60 miles (120 RT) on I 70 from Bowie to Maryland National Golf Course. The trip was 85% highway, and was some what hilly near the golf course. Going was about 33.4 mpg, with average speed just at 70 mph. At the end of trip (back home) I was at 35.2 mpg, which isn't bad since I was a little aggressive coming home, and was on the high side of 80mph on several stretches. Drove to work today, 20 miles to College Park, RT resulted in 34.8 this evening.
When did we all stop motoring, and start driving like we are concerned about fuel economy. It's a perk, but c'mon... i would gladly give up a half mile per gallon (when i'm getting 38-40) in order to have my windows down and open on an amazing day!
Just kidding - try resetting your mileage calculator - it's probably thrown off quite a bit by the early miles - those early tanks are not efficient.
I was just reading through this thread and noticed some mention of the Prius. I'm sorry but why are we comparing the Mini to a frigging hybrid? It's a HYBRID. It's SUPPOSED to get better gas mileage. Heck, the fact that the Mini comes close to a HYBRID shows either the Mini is amazingly fuel efficient or the hybrid system plain SUCKS.(it could also be a bit of both)
Either way the Prius drives like an emaciated grandma.

Wow, I was happy to get 33mpg in my S on a rainy trip to Baltimore from north NJ. If you're getting 40mpg in an S you should be thrilled. Unfortunately with traffic (and idiot drivers) it's impossible to use cruise control for very long around here.
My whole family in MCS (me, wife, & two children) & drove 40 miles to brunch mostly highway. Drove mostly with cruise control set at 65mph (GPS showing 62 mostly). At the end of the trip 40.7 mpg !!! Elevation difference between two locations about 80 feet only. Wow...... On the way back, spirited driving, 32.7 mpg
Great mileage info
I'm getting closer to Mini ownership
and spend spare time reading the threads
& learning. Seems the r56 gets much
better mileage than the R53.
As to some of the Prius owners out there,
I am one of them. If you want to get
lousy mileage with a Prius, you can.
Especially if you make short trips of
5-10 minutes.
My experience of over 50,000 miles in
2 years of driving a Prius has been
trouble free.
My fuel economy always exceeds EPA
estimates. My worst tank, with 4 adults,
my dog, camping gear for 4, on a 330
mile trip to the NC mountains was 46
Mpg; my best, here in flat land, mild
temps, was 69 mpg.

I took my R56 MINI Cooper S on a trip to the North Carolina beaches over Thanksgiving. Even with some traffic on I95 on the way home, I still eeked out almost 40mpg, close to 500 miles of driving mostly highway on one tank of gas. With premium fuel down to $1.75 a gallon, the MINI is now a very cheap way to travel!
I had to take an emergency road trip for family reasons today. Leaving from Atlanta to Youngstown Ohio, I didn't have to stop and get gas until Cincinatti where it still showed 114 range.
gage is showing exactly 40MPG WITH A/C on at avg 67MPH. Heck with the windows down it dropped almost .5 MPG, so I just enjoyed the A/C, to bad because it was 75 and nice out. It did just fine, and really never had to even take it out of 6th gear unless traffic slowed. Couple curvy roads and it hugged them like it always does.
It was gradually rising from the 36MPG, but that had a lot of atlanta stop and go sitting traffic.
I reset it while driving to remove any stop and go, and see how it did JUST HIGHWAY. Son of a gun if it doesn't just goto 40MPG.
I wanted to see only highway milage, and mini didn't lie. Seeing the range at over 525 miles on that refill was pretty kewl.
I love this little car more and more. btw: the windscreen sure gets filled with bugs and pollen on a long trip.

Mileage update
2008 MCS, 16 inch All-season tires, MT, ~6000 total miles.
FWIW, more data for you.
If I limit non-commute driving and pay attention to mileage, I can get ~40 indicated, probably 37.5 actual. This is during the summer.
In the winter in Washington State, more ethanol is added (an oxygen source for reduced pollution). Ethanol has lower energy density and I find that my best mileage is closer to ~37.5 indicated, probably 35 actual.
These maximum mileages are based on 26 mile 1-way commute with 3.5 miles on surface streets and the balance at left lane highway speeds, coasting in idle on long downhills and at the off-ramp, and using substantially constant-throttle running where possible.
My highest number of miles on a tank = 499.9
Winter gas, driving 33% surface and 67% left lane freeway, accelerating gently, no coasting, relatively high electrical load, and defrost (compressor) on, I get about 35 mpg indicated, probably about 33 actual.
(I have no direct recollection of summer gas with air conditioner on under these conditions, but I think its probably about 2 mpg higher, i.e. 35 actual.)
If I drive enthusiastically, I can get mileage as low as the mid 20s.
Cheers!

The best I ever got was 40.4mpg and 471 miles on the tank (at about 3500 miles on the car) That was a round trip visit to see the in-laws in IN driving about 60mph on mostly highway. We made the entire round trip on one tank of gas.
The last trip we took down there was over Thanksgiving. I drove a little faster (about 70ish) so the mileage wasn't as good. 37mpg and about 430 miles to the tank. I filled up in one of the southern IL suburbs a little earlier than necessary because it was cheaper than up noth where we where heading. This was with about 7000 miles on the car.

My 2.5 months old 2009 MCS auto is averaging 33 MPG on freeway, I am pretty happy about it
.
Unfortunately, in all city driving, it's down to about 19 MPG!!!
Anybody have the same number as mine? My daily trip is very short though, home to school is less than 2 miles...that might be the problem.

I have a 2008, MCS. And while I get more like 38 on the highway, I am the same as you in the city. Average 19.
And 90 percent of my driving is city driving. Only have 7800 miles on my car which i bought in Aug of 07.

Here's something to ponder about this subject...
I watched an episode of Top Gear (last series I believe) where they tried to get better mileage out of a BMW M3 than a Toyota Prius. All they did was drive the M3 more conservatively and a 300+ bhp BMW got better mileage than a hybrid. And it wasn't even THAT conservative. I mean they traveled at highway speeds, they just didn't treat the road like an autocross course. Which I know is hard for any of us to do, but it will definitely help mileage. I'll have to look through my video archives and post a clip of that episode.
