Anyone in California getting these astronomical MPGs? I'm at 25.6MPG 13,000+ miles.

During the break-in period, I hit 42 MPG actual during a long highway sprint. I'm getting a little over 35 MPG combined now, and I'm definitely not driving it slowly now that it's past break-in

AAAAAHHHHH ... THERE we go, now

After whining here about typical-under-30mpg performance: gave it its first oil change at 3400mi ... next tank with a long drive: 36MPG!

So, while you might be better off lowering the windows at around-town speeds, anything that increases drag is going to eat you alive at interstate speeds.

Plus, modern A/C compressors don't produce anywhere near the parasitic drag as compressors from 30-40 years ago did (which is probably when the myth started that you're better off with the windows down rather than the A/C on). A modern Sanden rotary A/C compressor consumes about 5-6 horsepower, whereas the older compressors could easily consume three or four times that much power.
Funny the guy with the cabrio is talking about drag. Do you drive with your top up now?

I'm still getting 36-38 with combined city/highway.

Using 91 octane Chevron or Shell.

less than 3000miles on my MCS but I get 34-35mpg on the highway. right now 80% city and 20% highway I'm getting high 20's ~28mpg. this is with 4 of my friend who all waited to drive my car after the engine break in period was over

My wife's R56 gets 33 mpg in combined hwy/city driving. That's about bang on for advertised mileage I think, isn't it? She's contemplating a 500 mile drive in the near future, I'm very curious to see what mileage she gets (I'm encouraging her to use cruise control, but she's averse to it).

Btw, when talking mileage, I think it's a good idea to mention what gas you use. Since we both have MC's, we use 89 octane (10% ethanol blend). Maybe those of you in California use the oxygenated fuel (I think they mandate MTBE additives for all fuel there). That would at least partly explain the lower mileage, since oxygenated gas has less energy per gallon and therefore lower mileage.

I believe CA stopped using MTBE because it was harmful to the environment (water). They use ethanol blend now instead.

I've actually gone over 700 miles on one tank and gotten 49.5 on that tank. MC, Citgo, premium, as I recall, but I'm not so sure it makes much diff.

Damn, thats like Prius territory! (Maybe even better, since they have such a small gas tank...)

That's terrific....I had heard the 40+ numbers before but it's nice to get confirmation. My current ride, a 2006 Jetta TDI (diesel) just got 39.75 mpg in mixed driving. I have slowed down to 65 max on the freeway....and I saw a 10% increase over the last tankful.

My friends have a 2008 Prius. Highway only driving isn't that impressive. They usually average 40-45 on the highway (road trips). Once those batteries drop to a certain voltage, the gas engine starts to allow charging. Now you're just carrying around heavy cargo (batteries) with a regular gas engine. Still, 40 is good, but many cars get that on the highway. My 17 year old Sentra still gets 42 highway, 36 mixed city/highway.

Vegas trip MPGNESS

We went for a trip to vegas recently (about 240 miles one way) we fueled up and headed out, I was determined to get good mileage and cruised 67-72 ALL the way, no speeding up to pass the ricers, the mustangs, nothing just cruised all the way, made it there on roughly 3 bars, AMAZING mileage, then we drove around (a short time due to a copilot error with the gps) then we headed back, (AC off it was cold outside and just the vents were enough) same deal 70 all the way, got the fuel light on, as we pulled into the gas station a block down the street from the house.

Made it 480 miles on 12.2 gallons 39MPG FTW

Normally I get 24-26mpg (allot of city and me being racy~)

You're absolutely right, I forgot about that. Love ethanol btw, it does help keep the engine (and environment) nice and clean.

Btw Niziex, absolutely amazing mileage out of an MCS! I assume it's a 2nd gen, right? Those turbo motors impress me more and more. I may succumb to temptation sooner than I planned and buy the 2nd gen cabrio S when it comes out next year. I posted in another thread, the 2nd gen MCS I drove for a while actually got better mileage than my 05 MCc, and like you, I drove it pretty spiritedly. That was very impressive for the MCS, even given the cabrio's poorer aerodynamics and gearing.

Oh, well. Guess I gotta go practice driving better!
The only time I've managed to get over 40MPG is when the computer was set to imperial gallons. That was in indicated MPG, not an actual calculated value (given the computer is quite optimistic).

The best I've ever managed is 31MPG in Tristan, being really really careful with the driving, but that's no fun. Still, I'm quite happy with real high 20's MPG in Tristan, its must better than Number 1 managed. On the highway the computer is indicating high 30's at reasonable cruising speeds. I'm really very happy that Shawn is showing over 35MPG on the highway (at reasonable speeds).

I've come to the conclusion that I'm not an economical driver, and I'll live with that. Its fun.

I'm on my 3rd tank of gas, maybe 900 total miles on the car. I reset the mileage indicator at the beginning of this tank and am doing my normal mix of freeway/city driving. That's a 26 mile one-way commute with only about 4 miles on surface streets, plus some normal around-town driving.

37.5 mpg right now as it sits parked in the garage.

*However*, I have to admit -- Seeing the mileage number go up and up in front of my nose is motivating me to try to make it higher. So I really don't have my foot in it nearly as much as the first two tanks.

Through the first two tanks, a little over 800 miles, my gas mileage gradually increased from about 30 to end up at 33.3 mpg. I didn't hesitate to accelerate briskly during that time, although I did try to generally avoid overboost and tried to keep it below 4500 rpm. I was not completely successful because overboost and 6 grand is so much fun. I think this is outstanding mileage for a brand new engine.

We just came back from a 750 mile roundtrip to Mayberry (Mt. Airy) NC and we averaged 41.1 mpg overall with the AC on and 70 mph most of the time! Needless to say I am thrilled. Beats the crap out of the 97 Yukon! Mayberry was cool too.

At just under 5k on the clock I'm averaging 37 to 41mpg with a 60 mile, 50 to 60 mph commute. Very little city driving. Occasional weekend trips around 100 to 150 miles at about 75 mph give me around 36-37 mpg. Using Chevron 91.

Hey Apple! Just curious....is that figure taken off of your computer, or did you manually calculate your mpg's? I've been calculating my own and comparing it to the trip computers readings, and have found that the trip computer is a "little optimistic" when it comes to crunching the mpg figure. Here are my calculations for the 7 tanks that I've run through my car:

Calculated MPG's Trip Computer MPG's %variance

34.5 37.1 7.5%
33.6 37.3 11.1%
36.5 37.8 3.6%
34.3 37.6 9.6%
36.7 39.0 6.4%
33.7 36.8 9.2%
33.1 35.3 6.5%

(sorry the numbers and headers got smashed together (copy/paste from Excel), but you get the idea....)

Also, the speedometer is about 2mph fast (digital readout on tach says 40mph, GPS-calculated speed says 38mph (with cruise control engaged on a long flat stretch of road)).

Bottom line: Even with the error considered, we are still getting FANTASTIC fuel economy! WAHOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, love your 'blog and your car's name. Did you do the illustration?
