Antenna Replacement

So I got the ultimate MINI that loves to crash itself. Fun stuff. Got the crack in the windshield day 2 and today, my garage door decided to close by itself after i got in the car and pulled out. Maybe a ghost hit the button. Basically my antenna got partially pulled off and I'm wondering what the best replacement idea is for it. '07 MCSa coupe black top non-sirius satellite antenna (that really long ugly chopstick antenna). The aerial was useless anyways, it was bound to happen. If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it!

+1 for ALTA. I have the 4" "shorty" and love it.

Also, not that it matters since you said that you don't have it, but the antennae for both Sirius and the OEM navigation system are integrated into the "shark fin" base, if your MINI is equipped. So no worries with reception.

I recently put on your typical 4" stubby (mine was from minspeed.com). looks okay (doesn't look as good as i thought it would because of the base of the antennae). I haven't tested it's reception though, but the smaller you go there will be some amount of reception loss. I don't think you need to spend $30 on an antenna when many different types/brands of stubbies will fit.

If I messed up the base, it hovers like a quarter inch above the body now, any easy fixes on it like just pushing down on it hard enough or should i take that to the dealer? i called the dealer for a replacement and they quoted me 400 bucks to replace the base (40 bucks parts) and i threw up in my mouth.

$400 sounds steep but what is involved in replacing the base? Possibly remove the entire headliner? What did they say about it? Could be quite a few hours of labor, which is always expensive. You might want to use your insurance on it.

Sorry to hear that :(

I have the 2" Alta. I have had the 4" as well, but swapped it out because I like the way the base curves to give a better looking fit.

yeah they apparently have to pull the headliner. maybe i was exaggerating the true damage on the phone and they can maybe pop it in to place at the dealer. plus, i have the insurance that goes up ALOT if i use it.

2011 MCS here and just noticed the long whip antenna that came on the car is hanging on my garage door as I drive in or out. And thats with garage door fully open. So I wanna replace it.

1. Does existing antenna just unscrew off base ????
2. Whats a good replacement that still provides decent reception ???

1)Yes, it just unscrews.

2.) I've got the alta 2" and it didn't change the reception at all.

I read somewhere here that the FM antennae is in the rear side glass, the roof antennae is for AM reception.

I was wondering about that today, DD, when I first REALLY noticed the rear glass antenna. Anybody?

I bought mine on Ebay... for like 10 bucks with shipping... AMAZING reception and looks cooll because it matches pretty well the laser blue color of the Mini

I've been through about 3 different ones trying to get reception as close to the OEM whip as possible. Best I've got so far, and equal to the OEM whip, is the new Mini Sport Antenna. Probably pick it up at any dealer, or get it on ebay through Prestige Mini for $32.00

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MINI-...Q5fAccessories

Prior to Mini releasing this new antenna, I was using this, which also works very well. But it's longer than the Mini Sport, and thicker. (Because FM reception can suck in the Denver area without a decent antenna)

http://www.locustom.com/shark2_mast.htm

Both work equally well, I just like the Mini Sport Antenna because of it's looks and superior performance.

I've been through a WMW shorty, an off brand shorty...even shortened my OEM whip. The two linked above are exceptional.

That's good news. I ordered one of those for my yet-to-be-delivered JCW.

Just installed it, my first mod!!!!!.. Now for those of you who order it and like me, immediately want to install it without thinking things through first. Don't panic when it doesn't fit your 2011 Mini. Walk slowly back into the house , look in the box it came in and discover a little ziplock bag containing brass adaptors to allow use on multi year Minis.

Oh, antenna works great, just as well as original.
