Gas Tank Arrow Pointing The Wrong Way?

Ok, just a minor annoyance, but I think the arrow telling you which side the gas tank is on is pointing the wrong way? I assume the arrow next to the gas-pump icon by the readout on the tachometer should tell you which side the gas tank is on...right? Well, it points to the right side of the car, but everyone knows its on the left. What gives? I know my BMWs have this same feature, but their tanks actually are on the right. Did BMW mess up and just carry over the software without fixing this? Or, does the arrow stand for something else of which I am unaware?

Thanks!

Maybe that's the "distance to empty" readout on the tach?

I think you're spending way too much time analyzing things.

I think that's what he's talking about, too.
Some of the graphics/icons on the MINI is not exactly intuitive, but that could just be an European thing.

it just points to the number of miles you have left. its just a coincidence that some bmws have the tank on the right side. it is safe to assume that you would know what side your gas tank is on. or is it?

Or is it telling you to pull up to the right side of the pump?

For the longest time I thought the low tire monitor was a plumbers butt

It's an arrow pointing to a gas pump. As pointed out above, this is the symbol for "distance to empty" and is not meant to be an indication of which side the gas door is on.

I saw a blurb a few months ago on aol's welcome menu that said the pump
handle on the gas gauge icon tells you which side your gas cap's on.
Went out and found it to be untrue for my R50 and my wife's VW.
Another urban legend bites the dust.

I heard that Germans put the gas filler on the
right side because if you run out of gas, you would
then be filling it beside the road in the safety of
the ditch or median thing instead of standing more
in the line of the oncomming traffic.

Maybe the mini is on the left side because they are
British more or less. (?)

Anybody else heard this?

All my Benz's had them on the right, but I don't know if that is the reason. They also had the arrow next to the gas pump symbol pointing toward the right, which was to tell you which side the filler was on. I don't recall looking on the Mini.

Let's see the arrow points to the left side of the car, but the gasoline icon has the gas nozzle on the right side...so iwas like

Maybe the overseas cars have the tank on the righ hand side???

No, it's because the freeway gas stops are set up so you can only fill from the right.

Actually, I recall being told that car manufacturers had standardized the way to document which side the filler cap is on the car. They use the handle on the gas tank symbol to indicate which side. I'm not sure if someone was pulling my leg or not, but it seemed to be accurate.... except for the Mini, which has the handle on the right, not the left.

Ummm, we had an American vehicle in Germany, with left hand gas filler and we had no problem getting gas on or off the autobahns.

Glad that worked out for you. I'm just supplying the answer to the question.

My point is, your answer isn't correct. At least, it wasn't in the 80's in Germany and certainly isn't here now.

Every rental car I've used has an arrow on the gas guage itself that points to the side of the filler. The Mini doesn't have one on its guage. Maybe you can't rent Minis?

Lynn, there are no absolutes. But there are an abundance of gas stops where you can only fill on the right. Enough to make it a reasonable standard to put the fillers there. If I had been speculating I would have said "I think". Good day.

I'm almost positive that mine has an arrow pointing to the left side where the filler is. My wife's Caddy has an arrow pointing to the right, where the filler is on her car. I've used the arrow on several rental cars to pull up to the pumps properly as well...

It's not frorm a MINI, but this pic from the hoax-slayer link, above, shows the little arrow indicating that the filler neck is on the left side of the car...

And the guys at Cockpit Specialties have the arrow in a slightly different place... actually ON the lower portion of the pump icon

If you have an S just look in the rear view mirror. Can't miss the big chrome thing.
