Average delay between Order and VIN?

How long does it usually take to get a VIN after having placed an order?

Planning to finance through Pentagon Federal since they seem to offer the best rate I could find, but it looks like I need a VIN to apply for the loan.

I've still got plenty of time, just impatient and curious.

You won't get a VIN # showing in the Owner's Lounge until the Vehicle starts production. And remeber the Owner's Lounge is NOT very accurate in Vehicle Specs. at first. I will take a few day (3 at Most) for your Vehicle Spec to be accurate.
Welcome to NAM...the men in white coats will be showing shortly, Trust Me!!!

Hehe, thanks. I've actually been around NAM for a couple years, just on a posting hiatus for the last 5-6 months.

Surprisingly, my spec in the Owners Lounge was actually 100% accurate the day after I ordered.

Thanks for the info, guess I've got a couple of weeks before I can get the ball rolling on my financing.

Hey, Silver Rocket and RJ!

I called my insurance guy and gave him my VIN. He asked me when I actually GOT the car, so I told him I didn't have it yet. It hadn't even been built and would be coming from England. He laughed ... Then he told me he didn't need the info until I actually GOT the car. He said he couldn't even get it to come up on his system until some # days after it got unloaded in the U.S.

But, if you want an estimate, get your dealer to give you a VIN off a similar vehicle on his lot and use that for a coverage quote.

Not trying to "simply bump" this back up but how long should I wait before asking my MA to send me the VIN? I placed my order nearly a month ago. Will he know it by now? And what's the web address to input it to find out at what point the car is in the production line?

https://ol.miniusa.com/ sign into the Owners lounge. Set up a username/password and you should have gotten a production number from your MA. Once you log in with the production number, that web site will give you the VIN number.

beasleyboy........if you ordred your car nearly a month ago, your MA certainly SHOULD have your VIN by now. I received my VIN the day after I placed the order, and received delivery of the car 6 weeks + 1 day after ordering it. Sign into the Owner's Lounge, information on your car should be there by now. If your MA doesn't have your VIN number after nearly a month, something's wrong!!

I got my VIN about 3 weeks after placing my order, when my car went into production. Had to wait another 7 weeks (loonnng boat ride) before I could start motoring, though. You east coast people are lucky!

VINSs are generated right at start of yr scheduled build week. Dont wait for the OL to update; call yr MA or ASK-MINI. I had mine memorized by the time my (old) MINI arrived. Ins agent was pretty impressed.

I waited about 4-5 weeks from the time I ordered until I had a production number. The delay was due to my dealer having to wait to get their allocation in before they knew which production number would be for my car.

Same here. Its been a month and some change and I still haven't received a production number. My car's allocation isn't till late October and I believe my MA said something about having it in September. We'll see! I can't wait any longer!

I'm not sure I understand. I can't even get signed up for the site without the VIN or production number. I guess I'll have to personally walk to the dealer and speak to the MA's supervisor to get it but I don't want to come off sounding like an overdemanding person. But then, the MA never replied to my calls so I guess that kinda balances it out. I ordered the car on Aug 8 and they told me the delivery date is late October. Is there an e-mail for the factory in Cowley, England? THEY should know where my car is on the production line. Oh, and I did email Mini. They never reply. Oddly, BMW did but told me to call Mini. Uh, then why did you buy the company in the first place?

It took me 4 months to get my VIN, but I requested a delayed build date.

I also financed through Pen Fed, you can get preapproved for the vehicle, they just won't disperse the loan until they have a valid VIN to tie it to. Once you get the VIN, just give it to them, they send you a check. Badda=Bing. Oh, if you do it on-line, save another 1/2 point.

Call MINI and work this out, not sure why your so upset. Dude, your getting a MINI. Oh, USAA e-mailed me an insurance card the day after I got the VIN.

You should be able to get at least your production number from your MA (or the sales manager). Even if your car hasn't gone into production yet, it should have a production number assigned to it.

Screw the site. call 1866askmini, give them yr production number to get yr build week, then add roughly 4 weeks if y're on the east side and 6 if y're on the west. I ordered my car on Aug 5, got a week 40 build prod # a week later, got bumped to week 39 (9/21), and I dont expect to get a VIN until *that* week, with estimated delivery sometime around election day--if the boat doesnt sink and squash my MINI

You have to rememeber that the factory slows way down for mtce and annual vacations in Aug so there's going to be a little longer delay this time of the year. Plus the MY break; 2009s only started production this week! Moral: never order a MINI in late July or early Aug.

And FCOL quit fretting, you WILL drive yrself and those around you bonkers, man. Chill 866askmini is yr friend.

Unless he's a week 36, not neccesarily. If he's a 37 then he's close. See above post.

Good post from a fellow 6th gear head

This is another factor in the mix: dealer allocations. some dealers get more cars than others at any particular time as BMW NA sees fit.

The whole thing is a mess, but at least it's a much more efficient and faster mess than a few years ago, where people in some markets waited up to 30 months to get their cars.

My total wait time including the allocation time was 109 days. My car spent about a 15 days at the port as well.

It was worth the wait!
