I think you are jumping the gun . If you would take the time to do a search you would get a lot of info on this SZC problem. Motormouth was not trying to confuse anybody, his link was just bad. Listen up you newbys , this is a relitavely minor problem if the light is yellow, if its RED its not. This has been the case on the r56 since its inseption. It will require a trip to the dealer for a replacement. BEEN THERE, DONE DAT.!!

djam43, listing a meaningless acronym and a useless link did not further the discussion. I'm glad you're familiar with the terminology, others are not.

Again , if as ive said if you would trouble yourself to do a search , you would find the answer to the problem of that yellow light symbol, this has been gone over and over before.

I'll guess we'll just have to disagree on what constitutes a helpful post.

The reason I did not state exactly what is going on is because there are dozens of threads concerning this exact (and semi-common) problem.

I tried to post the link for the search results for SZL but it didn't seem to work. (there was a whole page of results)

After I've typed something 15+ times I'd rather direct someone to the info than type it again.

edit:

Just for those who think SZL by itself isn't helpful, I've made a clue:

Can you guys stop saying he has the SZL issue? That issue has nothing to do with the posters question. He has one light, triangle with an exclamation point, next to the trip odometer and no other lights. That is not the SZL issue. This is a normal function car letting the driver know that there is low washer fluid or the gas is low or some other normal occurrence.

Right. And if it were an SZL failure, there would be other clues, such as DSC off light, parking brake on light, non-cancelling turn signals, and wipers on when key is in but power is off. You'd see at least 2 of them.

SZL is no big deal--about a 2 hour fix, if the parts are in. Was just a PITA to me--mostly because of the turn signal thing.

As for OP's question, I'd do as one poster suggested--look at the actual alarm displayed when the car is first started. Everything should show up then.

Your wrong. I have had this issue, and had it fixed at the dealer. If you look at page 13 of the manual, you will see that symbol --round circle--- TRIANGLE--- with exclamation mark. ( this pertains to the DSC, not the washer fluid or parking brake.) It also states(DSC is regulating the drive forces in order to maintain vehicle stability)l That is all the lights that he will get for this problem. If he has the NAV screen it will spell out more info on the situation. Note !! Some people like myself did not have the turn signal cancellation problem.

Manifest is right in that it may not be an SZL problem. However, there is a good chance it is.

I'm not going to swear to it, and I don't have the book handy, but I'd swear that I saw it one time. (Humor intended.)

There's many non-emergency reasons it can show: If you're down to two bars on the fuel gauge this will show up, low on windshield washer fluid, service reminders like brake and oil changes coming soon (a bit too early for you at 1000 miles), when the DSC is off.

I've never noticed the caution icon sticking around for the low temperature warning. I only remember seeing just the snowflake icon in the upper display on the tach.
this is the most comforting thing i have read so far
I'm going to schedule an apointment at MINI of Manhattan and see what they can do for me

I don't know if you need to schedule an appointment with Mini yet. If I read the OP correctly, it's that little triangle below the h in 0mph in the photo above. In the picture, it's warning there is low washer fluid as indicated by the symbol in the square box. Just look in that box when you start the car, then open your manual to page 118 and go thru the the definitions of the symbols.

Don't go to the dealer quite yet! It'll just be a waste of time if it's 700miles away. Just read through the manual or someone on here explained how to read the simple codes already, I think you can even just hold down the button on the left stalk when that warning is on and it will tell you what the warning is for. If that yields nothing, THEN bring it to a dealer.

I don't know if holding it down when you start the car displays them automatically or not, but you use momentary presses of the button to cycle through the options and holding the button down for a bit to select.

The 08's manual isn't available as a PDF yet, but the 07 hardtop is, and it's basically the same for this particular issue. The check control messages part is on page 51 of the manual (Adobe Reader considers it page 53, since it includes the cover pages)

It looks like serious messages don't go away and won't be dropped down into just the lower odometer box:

Some Check Control messages remain visible
until the respective malfunction has been rectified.
They cannot be hidden. If several malfunctions
occur at the same time, they are displayed
in succession.
Here's the relevant bit from the manual, note the existence of the elusive low washer fluid indicator

Other Check Control messages are automatically
hidden after approx. 20 seconds, but remain
stored.

This symbol indicates that Check Control
messages have been stored. Check Control messages
can be viewed whenever it is convenient.

Viewing stored Check Control messages

Stored Check Control messages can only be displayed
if the driver's door is closed.

1. Briefly press the button in the turn indicator
lever repeatedly until "SET/INFO" is displayed.

2. Press and hold the button until the display
changes.

3. Press the button repeatedly until the display
shows the corresponding symbol and
"CHECK INFO".

4. Hold the button down.
"CHECK OK" appears if there are no Check
Control messages.
If a Check Control message has been stored,
the corresponding message is displayed.

5. Briefly press the button to check for other
messages.

Very nice post indeed nicknbecka .

Honestly, until you have the car in front of you there isn't much you can do. Once you get it back sit in it for about an hour or so and go over everything in the manual. You'll feel more confident about the car in the long run.

I just know how I'd feel if I had posted about a problem, and read some of the ohgoditsgoingtoexplode! knee-jerk posts that made it here before me.

I don't say that to belittle anybody else's previous issues, they're real and the steering sensor issue is a known problem; but come on folks. We all love our cars enough that I'm sure you're the same as me and freak out a little bit each time the car dings, only to realize you need gas in a hundred miles and everything's A-OK. I imagine that ding being a few hundred miles away is stressful enough.

+1 usually just a standard warning. most likely nothing to be too alarmed about

I live in Maine and it has been below 37 degrees many times. I have seen the triangle with the snowflake in it 3 times. All 3 times it was snowing. I think my car is smarter than me....
