Aftermarket Oil Filters?

So it's time for me to get my second oil change on my mini after 5500 miles from my first. (I drive the car pretty hard so don't want to wait longer)

My problem is that I'd like to have it done before I go on a long drive from IL to TX and the closest MINI dealer is 110 miles away. I'm leaving in a couple of days and don't have time to have the parts department mail an oil filter to me.

Does anyone have any suggestions on after market oil filters that can be used in an 07 MCS?

Thanks!

well, just to update I guess...

I went ahead and bought 5 qts of Royal Purple 5w-30 and an oil filter from Napa.

I dunno... I'm a little dubious that the filter from Napa is going to do the job. It just seems a little chinsy and generic to me and I don't want to put that in the Mini unless my concern is unwarranted in this case.

I always stock extra filters a couple of thousand miles before it is due. autohausaz.com now stocks them at 7.95 and if your order total is more than $50 you get free shipping.

It's a napa brand filter. It was about $7.00.

I haven't observed anything with the car that would make me think it needs a change because the oil is bad. I just wanted to be on the safe side for maintenance that's not that expensive.

If it's a case of the OEM part is really the best thing to do then I can wait till after the drive. I'm sure the car won't suddenly die on me or anything.

You can check this company out:

http://www.germanfilters.com

I bought a case of four from them a couple of months ago.

Does that include the housing seal and the crush washer for the drain plug?

Cool, thanks for the suggestions guys!

Do you know of any brands or part numbers for auto part stores that would be good alternatives? I need to have local access to the part since I'm only in town for another 2 days and if I wait for anything shipped, I might as well go OEM after the trip.

Guess I keep giving myself the answer... But who wants to wait?

I have no idea what the aftermarket (napa etc) filters look like . But the OEM ones I bought looked to be of superior quality/design than anything that I am used to.

I'm surprised you had any luck finding an aftermarket filter for the R56. There seems to be a general lack of aftermarket parts (brake pads, etc) out yet. You might want to double check that they didn't give you a filter for the '07 Cabrio, which is still the previous gen engine. (Unless of course you have a Cabrio.)

Yeah, I don't really trust it. This seems like a situation where I should just wait. Doesn't appear to have an easy answer.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the feedback.

It includes the rubber O-ring for the housing seal but does not come with a replacement washer for the drain plug.

I think Mann is the OEM manufacturer for MINI oil filters.

Maybe you can drop in a dealer along your route and pick up some filters.

I sure wouldn't use anything aftermarket while you have a warranty. If anything goes wrong with the engine you'd be sunk. And I'm sure "they'd" find something related, even if it wasn't.

I wait until you've got an OEM filter, and have someone along the way change it. You surely will pass MINI dealers going from IL to TX, so you can get the filter, and there are lots of oil-change places around. Don't know where you're headed in Texas, but we have several here--2 in Houston, 2 in Dallas, for example.

I know this is an ancient thread, but in the name of thread economy, I'm posting up here. Being thrifty by nature, and also somewhat lazy, I wanted an alternative to driving 65 miles to the closest dealer for an oil filter for the Clubman. NAM orthodoxy pretty much recommends OEM filters, which I've used so far. But, I researched the NAPA filter, which they list as PN 7512. If you go a little further, that part is clearly not the one for the 2007-on engines. The retail is a princely $14.45. The 7303 looks to be the correct part. The images on NAPA's website both show the O-ring, but not the crush washer.

Soo...I said to heck with that, and ordered three from Classic MINI. I figure that if I'm changing every 10K, any minimal savings from buying aftermarket to buy local isn't worth it.

Should I discuss oil now?
