So this light won't come on in MINIs made for the US market?

I did the humane thing and removed the rear seats.

Only in the UK we do
+1

I have that on my Australian R56 2007 Cooper S.

It's a good feature.

Hello from Germany (Europe ) - my R56 (11/2007) shows this exact symbol whenever I start the engine - along with the other maintenance stuff - however, I'm not sure why or when exactly (as in before or after the regular status messages). I will however check an pay attention the next time I start the MINI. It's definately no hoax (it might still be Photoshop'ped - you never know).

As at this point everyone is still guessing - I would like to offer my thoughts as well: my MINI has got the JCW Recaro seats installed, instead of the original ones and therefore my guess would be that the MINI tries to tell me that both (as in driver and passenger) front seat airbags are active. I assume the Recaro seats have no passenger detection and therefore I get the symbols as a reminder.

Even if I don't find any reference to the symbols in the manual, I could try to verify that theory by disabling the passenger front seat airbag (which is possible, as I ordered that option).

PS: If you find my English to be terribly off, don't flame - correct me where I'm wrong - I always appreciate a little lesson in English.

This picture shows the two rear seat belts as "unbuckled" or "not fastened":

I accidently discovered their meaning by having one rear seat fastened and then the display shows a "fastened seat belt" symbol on the appropriate side. :-)

So you'd only see it if there are peeps in the back with no belts on or if there's a belt connected and no peeps? I'll have to try it myself!

It seems irrelevant if people are actually in the back (that does make sense, as there are no sensors).
Just fasten one ore both seat belts and see for yourself!

After starting the engine the driver is being informed about the status of the rear-seat buckles (as in "buckled" or "unbuckled" for left and right) - regardless of anything actually being on the seats.

No rear seat buckles are buckled:

One (in this case: the right) rear seat buckle is buckled:

Both rear seat buckles are buckled:

I am not sure which MINI actually show it, but my R56 does...
