I asked the same question of MiniUSA via email. Below is their reply.

While the 2008 hardtops are largely the same as the 2007s, a few changes were made. These include a new one-touch up feature for the power windows and the removal of the Audio and Hyper Sport Packages. The items in these packages are now available à la carte. Also, the Xenon Headlights are no longer available in the Sports Package, but the Cold Weather Package does now include the Powerfold Mirrors. Again, you can still order the Xenon Headlights à la carte.

Adding to that:

In addition to being available a la carte, the sport suspension from the hyper sport package is a now a part of the standard sport package.

Same thing for the HiFi upgrade which is now a part of the premium package.

The MFSW is no longer a part of the premium package; a la carte only.

The prices of quite a few packages and options changed.

And oh yea, the much vaunted USB port!

Silly MINI

The MFSW is part of the convenience package now. Or, as you said, as an a la carte item.

Are there any different paint colors or interiors colors? I know about the option packages changes. No Sidewalk package I assume (that is a sweet package for the cabrio).

Have they done away with the automated turn signals? They're extremely annoying and are just one more example of BMW's fascination with getting the driver out of the loop.

What automated turn signals? Why not just program to one flash? (Remember to do both keys.)

If you want cruise control, you have to have the MFSW.

I was told by a dealer the auto-up windows feature was being delayed... the first round of '08s will not have it.

DoungR56--Volume & station (left side) and cruise control (right side). Also phone, I think, if you have it set up.

You can adjust the steering wheel up and down and back and forth, but I don't know if that's only MFSW or is standard on both wheels. That's on a lever as it goes into the dash/panel.

The adjustability of the wheel is also on the standard wheel.

Multifunction implies cruise control, radio volume, bluetooth phone buttons.

I have an 07... based on what I've seen there is no physical reason why this couldn't be handled via software as an update (the auto-down feature appears to be entirely a software feature to begin with). However, I'm going to guess that they most likely will not bother creating an update for the required modules (assuming the modules are updatable) as it seems that in many cases functionality updates usually are not retroactively applied to older Mini's (only bug fixes).

BTW, the MFSW is great to have, especially if you happen to have the bluetooth, nav or both. My old car had some controls on the steering wheel too and when I had to drive a rental for a few weeks after it was totalled I kept reaching for the now non-existant controls on the steering wheel with my thumb for a long time. Seems like a minor thing but the bluetooth and radio controls get quite a workout on a daily basis in my car.

Do you know what was meant by "first round"?

Early 2007s have the internally contained run flat sensors while end of the year 2007s and subsequent have the run flat system that places sensors on the wheels themselves. So if you have winter and summer wheels and tires you will need an extra set of sensors when you get extra wheels.

My understanding is that the auto power-up windows require extra sensors to ensure that passengers' fingers are not accidentally crushed when rolling up the windows. So I don't think that this could be implemented as a software upgrade.

I don't... he didn't mention a date when the auto-up feature would be coming.

I'm still in pre-order deliberation mode, so it's not yet a crucial issue for me. Well, as "crucial" as auto-up windows can be.
