R56 iPod Install $$
I was charged $500 supposedly the markup over the price on the configurator is for the install. This is not non-negotiable, another dealer was offering to do it for me without the install fee to try to beat my dealer's price. Decided not to go with them though for other after sales service reasons and mediocre word-of-mouth. So if you are on the market it's definitely worth the effort to at least try to avoid any install costs.
I should add though that the port install was very well done and the whole thing is now beautifully integrated in my "secret compartment". I can already tell that this will be a very worthwhile (and much used) option. I have my whole library with me now in the car.

I don't recall how much I was quoted, but I determined that if I added the iPod adapter, its install, and a lifetime satellite radio subscription, it'd be cheaper to get the Sirius receiver (which comes with a free lifetime sub) factory install.
I didn't care about my my music as much as I cared about music (that isn't played on the regular radio). Plus, if I really wanted *my* music, the 07s have both line in (from my ipod) AND mp3 CD compatibility.
So I got the satellite instead.

My Ipod is not included in my out the door price. There is a little footnote on my sheet for $399. My MA says the install is cheaper at the VDC. Who really knows? Mine was "thrown in" the deal along with my carmats.
I like thrown in
With as optioned out as my car is I am hoping they cut me some slack on this small fee.
Yes it is. However, you'd still have to take the car into the dealer to get the system coded so that it will recognize the newly installed iPod adapter. Thus, unless you can strike a deal with your dealer, they may end up charging you a good chunk of change just to code it (i.e. you probably won't save all that much money by installing it yourself).
The old R53 iPod adaptor took me 30-40 minutes to install and was pretty easy. It didn't require programming, though. I'd bet that it's gotta be cheaper than the $500 wanted for install, though. I couldn't imagine 'em charging you any more than 1 hour of labor for the reprogram. It isn't like the tech has to stand there and watch the data flow along the cable...
If you're considering the iPod integration option be sure and research similar threads. By that I mean that it's been said that if you have an iPod with more than 256 of anything (artists, playlists, albums) you can't see the whole list, because there evidently isn't enough memory in the car. That's not going to apply to many iPods, but if it does you may want to read other threads. The integration uses the Mini's CD changer input as the source.
I got mine at the VDC for $500. Another dealer was offering to do it for $395 but I chose to go with the first one for other reasons.
I like having my iPod and my music library in the car and the integration (in the storage compartment above the glove box) is great. However, one little bonus (that I will assume) the VDC added during the installation was a really annoying and persistent rattle coming from the iPod compartment over even light chop on the road. My car is currently at the dealer to see if they can resolve this. Also, when the SA was in the car going for the test drive to verify the noise he commented that at least the VDC installed the iPod box right side up. So basically iPod adapter good, VDC install not so good (although the dealer install may be even worse).

Does anyone know if there is a way to check some sort of firmware version in the iPod adapter? My iPod has stopped updating the Recently Played songs playlist when connected to the Mini. Only when connected to the Mini. If I connect to other devices that control the unit, it works fine.

MFSW! I would love to control my iPod with it. I have nearly 5000km on my car and I have listened to about 1/2 hour of radio total since I bought it. I use my iPod exclusively. Unfortunately I just use the aux in. I would really like to control my 80G Classic through the Steering wheel, but I have more than 256 artists/albums/songs so it is not an option at all.
I don't fiddle with it any more than to raise the volume or skip a current song, but having control from the MFSW is worth the $500 if it keeps my hands on the wheel.
The playlist updating used to happen, but slowly updated only certain artists, to the point now where it does none. Oh well.

Morristown MINI has the adapter for $260 (discounted from $320). My dealer quoted me $230 for programming. That's a savings of $10 if you install it yourself!
I hate the cost of th new iPod adapter. The one for the R53 was only $150 and you could install it yourself rather easily. $500 is WAY too much IMO, so I am using the aux input.
