R56 5 MPH Bumper
5 MPH Bumper
Hello
Can someone with a USA Mini tell me if the USA Mini Coopers have a 5mph bumper?
It's a criteria for importing it in Canada. If it doesn't have it, I'll have to have it modified to comply with this requirement.
Thanks

Bumpers rated up to a 5mph impact without significant damage.
Can't find anywhere on the MINI website specifying whether US-spec models are equipped with them or not. Although I can't imagine that they would not be.

The US and European bumper standards are only 2.5MPH, but I suspect that they'll also pass the 5MPH standard, since MINI sells cars in Canada. You might have to confirm that the bumper on a US-spec MINI is the same as the bumpers on the Canada-bound cars, though.
Yeah, I can't find it information on wether it has it or not.
I googled it and found a web site where the Mini had awesome results in 40mph crash tests but terrible results in low-speed front bumper tests, so that leads me to believe the US Mini does not have the 5mph bumper.
Because this has an impact for me importing a US Mini, about 1000-1500$ not sure the exact amount, I would appreciate if someone could clarify it.

Well, I tried to go to www.realoem.com to look up the part numbers for the Canadian and US bumper components to see if they were the same, but they only list US and Europe parts.
I you can go to a Canadian dealer and get the part numbers from them, you can go to realoem and compare them with the US-spec part numbers.
In any case, I'm sure the bumper *skin* is the same, and even if you do have to replace parts, they'll probably just be the collapsible parts that hold the bumper to the car's body.

MC2, it's probably a cost thing. The 5 mph probably cost a bit more.
If they used every country's strictest requirements and made a single configuration car for the whole world, they wouldn't be as cost efficient as they could be.

If you can find anything official that confirms that, it would be a big help for Stefx.
The only thing I can find about the US-spec MINI is that they meet the required federal standards (which here is only 2.5MPH). That doesn't mean that they might not also meet the Canadian standard, but since the US standard is only 2.5MPH, that's all that they have to certify the bumpers for here.

My 1982 VW Rabbit had a 5 mph bumper, the last year that required them.
After that, fewer and fewer cars had them, only the ones that continued
to use the same bumpers as the pre-1983 models, as the standards were relaxed
to 2.5 mph for 1983 model year cars.
(Half the speed means one fourth the collision energy).

This is a 5mph test and the damage is only $839.
Is it only the front bumper that has to be 2.5mph?

That is totaly false.
There are lots of cars that need bumper modifications to pass Canadian inspection, also the child seats restraints are different for Canada (for that mater US child seats are ilegal in Canada) and the day time running lights have to mandatory on, US MINI can be turned off..this might require a dealer to fix.

doesn't canada have a mini cooper dealership? why do you need to import one?
There are no impact absorbers on the MINI's bumpers. There's just the cover and then the reinforcement bolted directly to the body. The front reinforcement is pretty beefy, but there's not much in the back.
When i specked my MCS in July it was only 3k cheaper in states, but there was added hassle and travel to the US to get the paper work done and the fact that no dealer here would give me as much support as when i bought it in the states, like BMW loners.
also you have to add 6.1% import fee for Euro cars.
IDK about the 08, but the 07 had Xenons stock and auto wipers, and auto lights stock... also Metallic paint was included, clear rear lights, rear fogs and front fogs, DSC and TSC all standard features and more. To compare US to CND prices you should include all the CND standard feature to the US prices. I know 08 CND prices will fall but metallic paint will be 500 bucks.
