Funny thought I would make it further

You know how you tell yourself

well, surely i hope to be the exception.

3550 miles and the check engine light comes on (yellow)

Sure.

I'll report back on how the dealer does me.

Have you filled up with gas recently? If so, check the gascap. It's really easy to not get it on tight, which will cause a P0455 code and cause the lamp to come on. If it isn't tight, tighten it and the light will probably go off after a couple of drive cycles.

Probably something else though ...

Also I see your mileage is low, but I know some NAM users do a post-breakin oil change. Check the oil dipstick. My check engine came on right after signing all the papers on my MINI and just before driving it off the lot. Turns out the dipstick was never inserted all the way from the factory. Thank goodness I'm not superstitious...

WHEW

I am going outside to do these both right now.

I did make an apt for next wed at the dealer he
said his guess is that the emissions have to
be flashed.

the trip is like 120 miles one way.

I appreciate everyone's advice and hopefully i wont have to go.

If the light doesn't clear itself take it to Checker or Autozone. THey should be able to clear it. My wifes '05 MCSC had the check engine on because of the gas cap and Autozone cleared it right away.

available for the 2007?

Generic OBD II scanners should work. I haven't had to try it on my '07.

i checked the gas cap. it was on tightly.

i'm on my 3rd BMW, a lightly used E36, an abused E36,
and now the new mini.

(I knew early on to pay close attention to the gas cap being on)

This OBD11 scanner is definitely not suitable for the Mini. It is not CAN compliant. and will not function on newer cars..

OK that one is CAN compliant , but that is no guarantee that it will analyse and reset all the functions of the Mini computer, which BMW has made very unique. There are a few manufacturers that are working on a Mini only design. (Mini Mania comes to mind, but Im not sure, if I find it, I will pm you) Do a Google search. You wont find it in EBAY.

If I were more than an hours drive from a dealership, I'd be finding an OBC tool in a hurry. I've got 2 dealerships within a 20 minute drive and I still want one for my R53.

My wife's R56 Cooper had the same issue you described. We took it in and there was an emissions software update for her model to correct it. There was also a positive battery cable upgrade.

Just make sure your dealer has worked on R56's since our dealer hadn't done an 07 yet and "fried" (their words) her ECU during the reflash. The tech knocked the coupler out of the port. They had to fix the ECU issue and replace the stereo module as it "fried" as well.

We have since changed dealers.

I have a CAN OBD-II scan tool at home.... I'll try it on the R56 tonight and see if it can talk to it. I used to work for a company that made OBD-II and OEM engine diagnostic tools. Has anyone verified the '07 R56 is CAN for emissions diagnostics? CAN is _not_ required until 2008 model years, although a ton of cars do use it.

Cheers,
Jeff

www.minimania.com sells a unique scan/ reset tool specifically for the R53 Mini, model NME4020. They are developing a model for the R56. So keep in touch with them.

At least the dealer owned up to their mistake. (Assuming the dealer covered the repair costs.) Your new dealer may not be so honest. Of course it's up to you, but it might be better to say with a known quantity.

Ya the dealer took care of it all BUT they only wanted to do a rental car for 24 hours. That was very cheap when they did the damage.

The new dealer is better all around and actually fixes things. Amazing.

Simply amazing.. I'm at 3520 miles yesterday morning on my way to work and, BINGO!.. freakin' Check Engine light comes on. A coincidence?.. I'm taking it to Flow in Winston-Salem in the morning to drop it off (240 miles round trip).

I'll letcha know what I find out.

If your apointment is tommorow morning at Flow then I'll have doughnuts for you around 9. Its my day to go in Early (8:30) and I always bring doughnuts on my early days for service customers.
