What is the humming when I unlock the car?

After the car has been off for awhile if I come back and unlock or open the door (if already unlocked), there is a humming sound coming from the car. It sounds like there is actually one from the front and one from the rear. I know it's nothing wrong, just wondering what it is. I can't really think of anything...the last car I experienced this on was an M3 where the humming was for the SMG gearbox pump.

I don't have a disc changer and haven't loaded a CD in it ever, so I doubt it. It's more like a pump sound or something similar. Like I said, it sounds a lot like the SMG pump on the M3. Hmmm....

It is an electric motor, and it is definitely on the interior. Difficult to isolate exactly where it is coming from though.

I thought it was the fuel filler cap locking, like there's a servo motor engaging.

Probably the fuel pump spinning to up re-pressurize the system. This way your car starts when you press the button.

I think its the fuel pump. Also, if there isn't a cd in the player, when I open the door the cd player hums for a few seconds, too.

How long do you think the battery will last with all the stuff that runs when it is turned off ?

It doesn't run constantly, only when you unlock the door. The car preps itself to be started.

If it was the fuel pump, and that is what I thought it was also, then you would think you could hear it outside the car. The sound is pretty noticeable when you are inside, but if you are standing outside, you cannot really hear anything.

As the fuel pump is in the gas tank, I would think any sound it made would be audible outside. Also, if it was the fuel pump, you would hear it constantly after the engine starts, but you dunt(tm).

So, Skuzzy you're not eliminating the Hyper Drive then?

I think your right, it does, however it is more.

Have none of you ever sat in your mini for a while after turning it off? Guess not, too much temptation to drive more if you stay in it. I always get to work a bit early, have a bagel and just relax, yes I eat in the mini, but you won't find a crumb! While I sit there the car "talks" the whole time. It's a chatty little thing really! I always assumed it was specific to the Nav unit, but now that others mention it, I would assume it has to do with the OBC as well as the Nav. I can hear something that sounds like a hard-drive spinning down and speeding up as well as little faint beeps, the faint hum of a small cooling fan and other computer noises similar to my laptop. My sounds for the most part all come from behind the dash.

Being that these new cars are based around a computer, it only makes sense that you have the same issues as one. Heat generated, fans to cool, sounds of info being saved and moved and so on....

Then you get to the outside and you've got a whole new set of sounds, lol, .

EDIT: on ya, and these sounds, they go on for a good 10-15 minutes after you get out.

The Mini does like to talk. Little clicks, clacks, burps, whirrs are all associated with the Mini experience and what they do to prep for and debrief from motoring.

Arnbut, I am not sure that electric wheel lock is actually a motor, but a solenoid.

TWON, I think the Hyper-Drive actually sounds more like a vacuum cleaner slowly spooling up to a frantic pace.

Well, I really did not want to have to pay that close of attention to it. I figure if anyone really wants to know they will figure it out on thier own.

Yes, I meant exactly what I said I meant.
