R56 Key FOB MOD!!!!
Key FOB MOD!!!!
Yep, made a mod to my key fob. Well, really I made a mod to the little pop out key thingy.
That key is where the hole is to attach a key ring. I like SMALL and LIGHT key rings in my pocket. Te problem with the mini key is, the little key's hole to attach a ring to is so fat (thick), that you have to attach a very large key ring to it so the radius of the key ring makes it all the way through the hole in the key. So you end up with a large oversized FOB, with a key sticking out the side of it, then an oversized key ring attached to it, then all your other keys...
So to solve the problem, last night I took the little pop out key out of the fob, and held both sides of the plastic hole part to the grinder, and ground it down so it is now only1/8" think, instead of the aprox. 1/4 to 1/2 inch think as it comes. Now, I can put a normal size key ring onto it and the radius fits through it. It still fits into the FOB just fine, stays in, and pops out normally.
I'll try and snap a shot of it.

The first pic shows the part I ground off, on the left side, you can see the plastic is a little different color and has a different angle. The 2nd pic shows the thickness after ground down from the side. If you look at your fob the same way, you'll notice the little keys plastic is much thicker than the end of hte fob. You can see in the pics, the key now fits a NORMAL sized 1" key ring.

TTIWOP
Think it's "This Thread Is Worthless Without Pictures"
Which, come to think of it, would actually be TTIWWP

I could have saved you a lot of trouble. Anyone who wants a 1" keyring on their fob can mail theirs to me and I'll put it on there (no grinding required) just like I did mine.

How'd you do that?
And by the way, it was no "trouble" at all. Took all of 10 seconds. 15 seconds, and your key might be gone, well, in little tiny flakes all over the floor anyway.
guess I just don't see the point of this one. I mean sure the ring will flop to the side to maybe a 45 but it will still not be perfectly flat. Guess I just don't have short pockets. Granted the bottle opener dug in on my leg once on Tatsu last weekend, but a readjustment in the pocket before getting on the ride a second time, resulted in no problems.
Mine looks just like yours, the only difference is the plastic on your is ground away. I'll take a pic later when I'm home.
Nope. My phone camera hand was shaking from prying the ring open.
PM me and I'll send you my address and do yours for free if you send the fob/ring!
I squeezed tennis ***** for a month before I tried it. Took 3 strokes off my handicap too.

I just put the MINI fob in the coin pocket of my Levis and carry a separate leather key case for keys and Lojack fob. The MINI fob, Lojack fob, and keys all together didn't seem appealing to me.
However, if I wanted to have the fob and a ring lying flat, rather than 90 degrees from each other, I'd probably connect the ring to the fob with a small strip of leather or Nylon strap sown in a loop or figure 8. Or, having been a jeweler in past life, I might make a silver loop that fit the MINI key loop and also held a key ring, and a little grinding on the key loop would probably be in order.
