While trying to figure out the wiring of my tail lamps in the R56, I noticed a strange thing. Along the rear panel on the right is a bundle of wires, some heading to the right side lamp assembly and some heading off elsewhere. Wrapped in that bundle is a black spiralled stalk with a transparent cap, about 2" long, attached to the end of it that looks like it has an LED in it (?). Very strange......

 

That is a fiberoptic cable that BMW Mini uses to establish a link to the cars computer for software upgrades, testing, etc. The "led" is a protective cap.

 

Oh.... Guess I can take off the glasses/nose/mustache disguise.

 

 

LOL I wouldn't do that quite yet, LynnEl. I mean, the software upgrade explanation might be viable...and it could be true in everyone else's MINI - but do you really think that's what it is in yours?

I'd proceed with a healthy level of paranoia if I were you.
