MC vs. MCS - Which is better?

On the one hand, the MC...

- gets better gas mileage
- comes with a spare tire and jack
- has a no-run-flat tire option
- comes with a classic Mini chrome grill
- has the exhaust pipe positioned safely on the side
- has chrome-trimmed boot hatch
- is less expensive to purchase
- is not turbocharged
- has lower hp
- lacks LSD option
- has regular pedals

On the other hand, the MCS...

- gets worse gas mileage
- is jackless and has no spare tire
- comes with run-flats only
- has black plastic grill and functional scoop
- has twin ankle-branding exhaust pipes inconveniently positioned in the center of the boot
- has roof-color trimmed boot hatch
- is more expensive to purchase
- is turbocharged
- has higher hp
- has limited slip differential option
- has stainless steel pedals

Hmm. Which is better? Both are (only to different people, which is great, since having the option enables each of us to have a Mini as close to our own sense of automobile perfection as possible).

Here we go again... (for the record, I'm an MC fan).

Meh.

Both are outstanding cars with enthusiastic followers. Good thing we have a choice.

Does anybody know where I can find 2 lb flies? I think the season just opened.

A jack is now provided with the MCS. However, not only does it not come with a spare, there is no good place to put a spare if you wanted to carry one. You would have to take up the entire boot (if it would fit), or put it behind the front seats.

- comes with run-flats only
- has black plastic grill and non-functional scoop
The scoop is now functional.

Neither is better. One may be more desirable to an individual, but that depends entirely on their needs and desires. In the larger scheme of the Universe, neither is better. They are just bits of star stuff.

I agree with you completely. The MC is better for me (now), but others may have different hierarchies of needs. It's great that MINI provides so many options so that everyone can be as happy with their cars as possible. I was just having some fun.

Why do people ask these questions? Are you just trying to get people pissed off at one another?

No, in fact I changed my conclusion at the top so at to acknowledge the value and worth of both models, as per Robin's post (and my reply).

LETS SEE, what you consider pros and cons are not what i consider pros or cons:

On the one hand, the MC...

- gets better gas mileage (pro, but im getting 36 MPG in my MCS)
- comes with a spare tire and jack (pro, but i have a jack in my MCS)
- has a no-run-flat tire option (pro, but i actually like the run flats, and
when they wear out i have the option to buy non runflats)
- comes with a classic Mini chrome grill (con, i dont like chrome)
- has the exhaust pipe positioned safely on the side (con, i like the twin
pipes)
- has chrome-trimmed boot hatch (con, again i dont like chrome)
- is less expensive to purchase (pro)
- is not turbocharged (con, its slower)
- has lower hp (con, again, its slower)
- lacks LSD option (don't care)
- has regular pedals (con)

On the other hand, the MCS...

- gets worse gas mileage (con, but againb im getting 36 MPG in my MCS)
- is jackless and has no spare tire (con, but i have a jack)
- comes with run-flats only (pro, but i actually like the run flats, and
when they wear out i have the option to buy non runflats)
- has black plastic grill and non-functional scoop (pro, hood scoop is
functional (do your research) and i hate chrome)
- has twin ankle-branding exhaust pipes inconveniently positioned in the center of the boot (pro, they look better)
- has roof-color trimmed boot hatch (pro, looks more sproty without
chrome)
- is more expensive to purchase (con, of course)
- is turbocharged (pro, this engine is simply awesome)
- has higher hp (pro)
- has limited slip differential option (egh, i dont care)
- has stainless steel pedals (pro, looks nice)

so according to your list i find the MCS to be the far better choice and value. i had an MC and always found myself wanting the MCS. i now have an MCS and don't want an MC.

It sounds like you've already made up your mind. Buried deep in your list is the the fact that the MSC is more powerful. For those of us who want that power, it's a no-brainer. If you're going to decide on the basis of the type of grill and the location of the exhaust pipes, well...

Whichever one you have the keys for is the better one.

LOL. Peace, brother. There is no wrong answer to my question. Both are best, only for different people.

Better at what? Getting 40 MPG? Speeding? Canyon Driving? AutoX? Road Racing? Drag Racing?

FYI, since when is the hood scoop on the R56 MCS functional, I thought BMW MINI decided that leaving the hole there and using it for something wasn't cost effective, so they put a little plastic grill in it and pretended that it served a purpose (Yay! Mustang...).

*Edit* After reading further I've discovered that the scoop is semi-functional. I don't really see having a hole in the hood blowing air from outside as functional, but whatever, better than the ghetto plastic piece they had in there when they first came out. Air is blowing inside from the grill, so slightly more air blowing in from the hood scoop isn't going to do much of anything.

I never get these threads, there have been 50 of them, and after the first 2 posts everyone just starts bickering back and forth.

The better car is the one that fits your purpose. None of us know what that purpose is, so asking a question based purely on opinion is silly.

I wouldn't be able to live with 120 HP. I couldn't live with 168 (Added nearly 100 HP with mods by now) :-\.

Here are my thoughts when i picked the MCS over the MC.

I drove the MC first, loved it. Great handling and really good response.

Then drove the MCS, handling was better more preformace carlike. While on my test drive, I was faced with a dumba$$ coming over into my lane without looking, I was able to step on the gas and the turbo moved me into the second land and past the dumba$$, i felt like a non creepy burt reynolds.

I concerned about MPG, however willing to take a small hit to get a more responsive car with power to spare when i need it.

I think its too much a personal choice, but the MCS was right for me.

I would get the MCD, but time table might be 2-3 years before its in the US.

I truly believe that this question will be asked on NAM at least every 6 weeks from now until the end of time and so we either 1) have to just accept it cheerfully (more or less) or 2) bump this thread over and over so inquirers have a place to post that isn't buried. I think for a new buyer it is a fair and fundimental question (although trying to answer it over and over is admittedly painful) and that us why it comes up again and again.

It's a matter of "show" or "go". I got an MC and put the aero package on it. It might be as fast as the S, but I think it looks as good or better. Saved $$, got MPG, and have a car that gets lots of compliments.

MCS is just amazing in that such small engine has so much bottom torque. Conventional small turbo engines are infamous for no bottom end. It's a magic!

One thing must be said....the MCS is an utterly, amazingly insane value considering the standard upgrades, the improved brakes, and the engine performance that even tempts comparison w/ the previous JCW. Wow!!!!
