R56 Why the hell do the new MINIs look so bloated?
The pedestrian safety issue isn't so important in the U.S. as it is in much of Europe where the ratio of pedestrians to cars is MUCH higher than here.
By the way, I and most of the people I know like the way the new MINI Cooper looks. Sorry you are so unsettled by the changes.
Here's a link that describes even more of what you would call idiotic safety stuff that was so much a factor in the MINI Cooper structural changes:

So can someone explain why the new hood scoops are fake? That's a question that's been overlooked. Sorry, I have to continue my "MINI-bashing."

I really don't know but probably for the reason MINI put a "fake" burble in the exhaust in the older cars ... fashion?
Yes, people here tend to forget sometimes that 20K "enthusiasts" are a small fraction of the 160K cars sold in the US. The masses find it an annoyance (much like the SC whine used to be) and clearly BMW answered.
Interesting that the MINI website features a growling bulldog in its opening frames--matches the stance of the R56 perfectly. I LIKE the aggressive look!
(And I'm a girl...
)
I don't like trolls, though.

New Mini is the 5% of the new cars that actually shed weight compare
to it's prev models... It gained some length for the new engine.
The new turbo engine really does have decent torque..
What do you drive anyways...?

More cushion for the pushin' (in the twisties).

(Yes, I know the R56 is actually lighter)
To paraphrase Drederick Tatum of the Simpsons, MINI-on-MINI violence must end!

I like the new MINI's look quite a bit.
You know what else I like? The fact that my wife and I recently survived a high speed collision (caused by a drunk driver in a situation where I had absolutely 0 control) almost entirely due to modern car design safety. It's one of those things where a little perspective goes a looooong way.

I'm not sure whether or not it's just in my head since I don't own one of these cars, but my cousin does and I've been driving it quite a bit lately. Yesterday I went to the dealership to check out the prices of some stuff and they had a few new MINIs sitting around.
Honestly, to me it looks like it's so much bigger than the 1st generation. Also, the hood scoop on the new S is fake? What the ****?
This is not a Mustang.
Something tells me that it's all a result of the idiotic new pedestrian safetly laws that are destined to destroy every car design from now until the end of the automobile (which I hope will never come).
Has anybody else noticed this?

Some may call it fake, but the MINI designers saw it as heritage.
You're right, I am pretty frustrated with new cars in general. It's not just the designs, it's many other things. So I plan to keep my car as long as possible, and keep it as new as possible, until it eventually explodes one day. Then, depending on what's out on the market (maybe another TVR will come along, maybe Porsche will stay true, who knows) I may buy an older car or something new.
I'm not dissing your cars. Like I said, I could care less about the MINI. I'm just saying that I like the previous MINI's looks better than the new one. I'm sure it handles great and whatnot, just like the new 3 series handle better than the E46, but which one do I think has more character and style? You can guess.
Whether you all get butt-hurt because of that isn't really my problem.

Folks I think we have a GENUINE YUGO owner on our hands. He just can't handle this new fangled technology.
Seriously though...don't feed the trolls. He's gotten plenty of jollies off this thread.. let him recoup and move on.
he is mad because someone just stole his ten speed. i am still trying to figure out why he felt the need to take time out of his busy day (obviously filled with writing letters to car designers telling them that what their doing is wrong) to search and find nam.
+1...I think we've given him enough attention. We should let him take his "bashing" somewhere else. I think his ignorance has gotten enough responses for a day. IMHO.
BTW, if you could care less about the new MINI, why are you here?
They are not fake. The very first ones that came over were completely blocked. Mine, (13th week build), has a functional scoop. It lets cold air in while driving, and lets hot air escape over the turbo when sitting. If you had read this forum, instead of just dropping a troll, you would know that.
The new bumper laws in the early 70's were destined to destroy car designs too. And they did for many years. This particular MINI change is very mild in comparison.
