2013 Clubman JCW for 20k miles/year DD?
Stumbled upon a really clean 2013 JCW Clubman and am taking it for a spin tomorrow. It would replace my 203k mile Ford Expedition as my DD. I rack up about 20k a year to and from work so the fuel economy would be quite welcome.
Curious how these later cars hold up. I understand the “N18” motors are the ones to get so thats reassuring. This is a pretty low mileage, one owner car so there doesnt seem to be much of a story to it.
Was set to buy actually going to replace my truck with a 2013 LX570 and sell my truck but the Mini would be $16k cheaper to buy and has considerably less miles. The Lexus would last “forever” but would drink more gas than my current truck and it just wont be as fun to drive. Certainly miss having a fun DD. Had a MKV R32 for almost 3 years a while back.
Ive got a 4 year old and a 2 year old that would be in booster seats in the back and they are super stoked about the possibility haha

Here's some fun math - lets say over the last ten years a gallon of regular cost $2.50. After 203,000mi at 15mpg that comes out to $34,000 in gas. A JCW over the same time period (and assuming $3.00 for premium at 35mpg) would only cost $20,000. Not to mention fun factor, ease of parking, etc. For the number of miles you drive, it just doesn't make sense to have a huge vehicle unless you just truly require it for other reasons.
I had a lawn mowing business in high school and gave it up in college. I was commuting similarly in a full-size '94 blazer that got 12mpg combined since I had previously needed that truck for the business. This is when gas topped $4/gal and pumps apparently would shut off at $100. I ended up taking the Cash for Clunkers bait pretty quickly.

I've done similar tallies many many times. We "need" something this size around the house for various tasks. My wife drives a GX460 so I just continued to drive the Expedition as buying another car for the pure purpose of fuel savings didnt make financial sense.
Similarly, now that its getting older, I was going to sell it for another full size truck (LX570) and continue to bite the bullet but when I stumbled upon the Clubman I saw yesterday, I figured, with her blessing, I'd keep the Expedition around as a beater and daily drive the Mini. Cheaper buy in than the pre-owned LX570 I was eyeballing, fuel savings, insurance savings (i'm hoping) and the fun factor really helped push it over the edge for me.
I'm hoping today's test drives involves some paper signing afterwards!
Keeping the Expedition is no longer on the table. She'll go to a good home if the Clubman comes home with us tonight. Theres always Enterprise for all my full size hauling needs I suppose. LOL

That's what we do! Well, U-Haul usually, but same difference. Online shopping has actually been a huge help with having all small cars. We oftentimes can pick something out in the store or online and just have it shipped for free or less than the cost of renting something. I actually had to get the Clubman because, with our first kid on the way, a garage of coupes and a motorcycle was a bit too parred down - the clubman JCW now counts as my first vehicle with more than two doors, haha. To be honest though, I was second-guessing the JCW aspect since I have a sports car for when I want to go fast and a motorcycle, so the commuter car can be boring. I went back and forth over this or the S since it was still an improvement over what I had, but in the end I am very glad I went a bit overboard.

I'm in a similar boat with a "sporty" car on the side and a bike but this JCW is just priced right

I'm really curious what you end up paying if you don't mind disclosing that. If it is a manual, the '13 and '14 ones are few and far between, so I did a lot of research before I got mine. I had to buy it from Texas since the only one within a few states was an automatic.

A friend of mine was buying hybrids approximately every 2 years. Talked about how much money he was saving on gas. I tried to explain to him the total cost of ownership of a vehicle and reduced initial purchase price and maintenance costs associated with more conventional cars (i.e. Honda Accord/Civic). He didn't really want to hear it. Bottom line was he wanted a hybrid because he enjoyed having new tech and all the bells and whistles. Nothing wrong with that, just say so.

On the fence about the decals but i do really like the color combo!
Its got a set of OZ wheels on it currently. May try to source a set of factory Challenge wheels.
When I return from vacation im ordering a set of JCW side skirts to have painted and installed! Really think it would complete the look of the car. Surprised they werent stock on the car.
