Retrofit retractable cargo bay cover into 08 clubman

Does anyone know how to retrofit a retractable cargo bay cover into a 2008 clubman? Any help would be greatly appreciated I am new to Mini.

I believe the newer clubmans cover is already retractable from the factory and is a direct fit for older clubmans. I'm not 100% sure on this, but someone was selling one here and said it would fit.

You could always run to the dealer if you're close by and ask to see if you could try it.

I have tried one and it doesnt fit the thing is i like the connivance of the retractable one over the non retractable and was wondering if there is a way to make it work.

Check realoem.com... The retractable cover snaps into little plastic rails with notches above the carpet-covered side panels in the back. If the 2008 doesn't have those you'd have to look at adding / swapping the necessary interior parts to support it. I'm fairly certain it'll be possible, but have no idea how expensive / readily available the parts would be. Unfortunately our cars are new enough it's not that easy to come by wrecked donor cars for interior bits and such like this yet.

You can see the plastic bits with the notches in this pic:

EDIT: did a Google Image Search for pics of a 2008 boot and it certainly looks like they've got the same bits as the newer ones. Are you sure you were trying to put the cargo cover in properly? You have to hold it perpendicular to the bits on the sides, push it down and rotate it to horizontal while pulling the whole assembly toward the back of the car to lock it in place. It's really easier to do than to explain...

it has the same pieces just that the back slots were made for round pegs and the retractable covers have oval so that do not fit in

According to the parts diagrams at realoem.com for a 2008 USA Clubman manufactured in 09/2007 the parts that accept the cargo area cover are the same as those on a 2011 USA Clubman... If for some reason you have some part other than that listed in the diagrams, these should be the parts you need:

Trim, waistrail, luggage bay, right 51476954442 $31.65
Trim, waistrail, luggage bay, left 51476954441 $31.65

The slots nearest the seats (where the cover reel fits in) have spring-loaded bits that are round when there's nothing in them (1). You insert the cover facing upright (90 degrees clockwise from how it will ultimately lay down) such that the skinny part of the oval pegs pushes the spring bit open a small amount (2). Once it's in all the way like that you rotate the cover downward / counterclockwise while pulling it toward the back of the car... This pulls the spring jaws open enough to fit the oval peg (3).

Clockwise / counterclockwise are described if you were looking at the peg on the left / USA driver's side of the car. Directions would be reversed on the right side of the car. Numbered links go to some quick pics I ran out and snapped to illustrate the instructions.

Unless you only carry small stuff and it needs to be covered I wouldn't bother. I constantly put odd stuff in my car and it just needs to go in and out at least once a week. The cover now resides on my back porch as I don't use it.

I can't speak for OP, but I like being able to toss things back there and have them hidden from view - like my work bag if I've got to stop somewhere on the way home, bags when shopping and making multiple stops, etc.

Of course, in my case if I've got to carry something very odd or bulky I have to take my daughter's car seat out to fold the rear seats down, which is much more of a pain than removing the retractable cover.

I show the trunk cover had a year split in 8/2010 , but I believe it was just a color change.

Have tint... Opaque cover > tinted windows for hiding stuff.

On another note - damn that retractable cover is expensive!

The problem is, it really isn't even retractable, mine just folds up and the slop hangs down if it is in the "put away" configuration while in the car.

As far as hidden goes, I don't worry about my car being broken into. I have tinted windows and the aerodynamics of the car cause the rear windows to be covered in a film of dust within 3 miles of the last car wash, so its hard to see in.

Eew... Yeah, I think if I had the older one I'd probably toss it, too.

On the plus side for owners of older Clubmen(?), the newer cars don't come with a laptop!
