Is a hardtop a lot faster????

Hi all;
About a 2 months ago I purchased a 2008 Clubman S.. (I like it too) Droped it off at dealer to fix the window they gave me a loner car (2011 hardtop S) and holly sh-t this car runs like a striped *** ape. I really like this. Sooo how come my car don't run like this. Do the 2011s have some new stuff and I WANT MY CAR THIS FAST. I know the clubman is a little heavier but I don't see the difference being that much. My wife drove it and came home and said (that car gets it! it's almost out of control). Maybe I'm crazy maybe you guys can confirm I'm nuts or does my car have a issue. Any info would eas my mind this Saturday nite. Thanks

The 2011's are faster than the pre-'11 cars. The Cooper S cars added a few peak hp and quite a few more across the powerband by adding VANOS/Valvetronic.

The difference between an equivalent Clubman and Hardtop is the difference of having a ~250lb person sitting in the passenger seat. Noticeable? Yes, but not as much as it seems you're talking about.

I'd say it's a combination of three things:

1. The loaner is an '11 with the above changes
2. You drive a Clubman that weighs a couple hundred extra lbs.
3. You're probably driving the loaner harder than you do your Clubby (like everyone else does), so the loaner's ECU has learned an agressive driving style compared to your everyday driver Clubman.

Ah the rental car syndrome. Everything you want to do to your own but can't afford.
That makes sense. The car is just quicker. Nice to drive. Still love my clubman but now I need more power.
Thanks for the info. I thought it was something like that.

Yeah, it wouldn't take much to even it out. Something like the JCW Stage 1 kit and you'd be in the ballpark, probably.

We have both and the 2008 hardtop feels just a little snappier in the turns and just a touch faster than the 2011 clubman.

Actually, the Clubman is only about 135 lbs. more than the Hardtop. More like having an average size girl in the passenger seat. Most of the difference in weight is attributable to the additional side door and a bit more for the rear barn doors.
