Weight Savings?

I'm still waiting for my Clubman to come in, so I'm engaging in these thought exercises to help pass the time. Does anyone know how much weight you save by not getting the sunroof option? I searched the NAM forums for the term "sunroof weight," but I only found results for the 2002-2006 cars, which were in the 60 lb. range. I didn't order one because I don't really enjoy them, but I was wondering what other bonuses there might be!

Congrats on your order, I too wondered that when I skipped the sunroof. I think it is a little more than 60 lbs. and it is two(2) inches of headroom.
For me the hardtop(no sunroof) seemed a little more rigid on my test drive of a sunroofed clubman.
I am really happy with the solid roof Clubman I ordered.WoooHoooo

Other bonuses? There seem to be a fair number of threads on sunroof issues, so I'd say that not having a sunroof saves you from worrying about all those issues. Roofs that leak. Roofs that don't open (or close) properly in the heat/cold. Noise from the sunroof. Etc.

Thanks, Oxyblue! Do you mean the difference in weight between getting and not getting a sunroof is 22 lbs? Apologize for my ignorance.

Both the R55 and R56 have the same sunroof. The glass panels weigh 15lbs a piece and the frame weighs 18lbs. Once you include the motor, sunscreens, seals and wind deflector it adds up to 55lbs.

Yes 22lbs is the different between having a sunroof and not having one.

Well, I guess a 20 lb. weight savings isn't bad. Thanks for the information, everybody!

I hope you mean R55 not R57 as the R57 is a convertable and does not have a sunroof as in the R55/56.

I notice that when I open my sunroof, my Clubman seem lighter on the inside......not heavier.

...or don't buy a MINI at all, and avoid every issue ever mentioned on NAM!

The sunroof on my MINI had the "sticking" issue, which MINI fixed. I'm glad I have it, even with the issue I had.

Saving 20 lbs AND lowering your center of gravity... hmm, that is a cool trick! No convection oven effect, either. Rats, why didn't I think of this?!

Hang in there, it's worth the wait.

I think they should offer a panel to close out all the light from the sunroof. That and the headroom decided me. The weight issue is interesting, but doesn't make any difference to me.

Headroom is not an issue in this car with or without the Sunroof. I'm 6 foot and it is ample to say the least.

Why would you care about saving weight? Enjoy the car for what it is. When MINI starts to race in INDY or NASCAR, let them worry about weight.

I just don't see the issue with saving a mere 20lbs. I could stand to lose 20lbs. so, I will stick with the sunroof and start a workout program!

Pretty soon, we will see someone removing all of their interior parts just to get to work faster!!

Sorry, I don't get why anyone would care about weight for a street machine.

I am 6'3" and long waisted, so headroom is an issue for me. I really appreciate the extra I get with no sunroof, and I am really glad I don't have the sun baking my little round pointy head also. Ain't it nice we got a choice!
