Black smoke coming from underneath your MINI's hood? There's an app for that

looks like we have our on Mini app now
Have you ever found yourself in dire straights on the roadside ? Ok, so this application may not cover such issues as the one pictured above but if you own a Mini (not only does the world feel sorry for you, but) you're in luck.
From Engadgetmobile:
"Car companies have been trying tap into the iPhone's mojo seemingly since day one, and BMW subsidiary MINI is the latest to take a crack at it but this time, it's actually useful. The company's new roadside assistance app was created in partnership with Allstate and provides the usual array of services you'd expect from an OnStar-like system, including service appointment scheduling, troubleshooting guides and tow requests for when you find yourself in a genuine pickle. The phone will automatically submit your location and your car's VIN when you connect, so you spend a minimum amount of time sobbing into the phone. The app's available now for the BlackBerry Curve, Bold, and yes, of course, the iPhone."

So okay I clicked on the first picture in the article and it took me to MINI Roadside assistance and its app finder. I have BlackBerry Curve 8330.

I filled out the application using AT&T as they did not list Verizon as a carrier.

They sent me an e-mail and when I opened it it gove me a link to click on to get the app.

Downloaded the app and installed it.

Very easy set up, just put in your name, car color, and VIN and then press "Register" it registers and gives a you back another screen to "Youify" Add yoru cars Nick Name and yo are done with the set up.

From there the screen has 5 options.

1. My MINI - lists your MINI's Info

2. Roadside Assistance - brings up a screen and asks if it is an emergency and tells you to first call 911 if it is an emergency

3. Get Service Details - Retrieves the details of the service appointment you set up thru roadside assistance.

4. Feedback Form - a small for for feed back about the app

5. Pass It On - send an e-mail to someone you would like to have the app.

I will add some screen shots shortly

Here are a few screen shots.

1. Screen shows MINI Roadside Assistance Icon as a Red Triangle on a Balck Square upper right corner of picture.

Main Screen of MINI Roadside Assistance App

MY MINI Screen

Roadside Assistance Screen

My screen capture program does not want to capture the screens after this one. So here is an explination.

highlight the 911 in red and press the button and it asks you to confrim you want to call 911

highlight the yes button (it is highlighted in picture) and it takes you to select service or call screen press on select service and it give you the following list of services.

battery
tire
fuel
locked out
mechanical
accident
other

If you select one of those is take you to anothter screen where you can select to make a call about it.

I have not tried any of them as i do not need assistance but it look like a cool app

From the web site:

This App will register MINI vehicles model year 2004 and newer. Older MINI vehicles cannot be registered within the App, but are welcome to use services. Services for non-MINI vehicles and MINI vehicles outside of manufacturer's warranty coverage are subject to fees.

So if you are out of warranty it will cost you to use it, but they do not state what the charges would be.

Read the article in the Wheels Blog on the NY Times the other day: http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2009...apps-for-that/
...The call actually goes to Allstate, which runs the backroom roadside assistance for Mini. When the Allstate dispatcher connects with the motorist, it is largely to confirm the data that was sent. (Allstate has no app of its own but said one is coming).

The advantage to using the app it that it speeds up the transaction. “The challenge is when you have that roadside event, it takes a lot of time — well not a lot of time, but 10 minutes,” said Tom Young, the vice president of business development for Allstate Roadside Services. The app cuts that average to about two or three minutes.

The app is free, and works on the Apple iPhone and Blackberry Curve and Bold if they are on the AT&T, T-Mobile, Alltel or Tracfone networks, said a press officer for Mini.

Mini drivers under warranty get the service for free, but anyone can use the app. “You can use it if you drive a Ford, but it wouldn’t be covered under Mini warranty,” said Mr. Young. “There is just a one-time fee of $119.95.”

With that in mind, said Ford owner might opt for the AAA Roadside app for the iPhone. The app is free, but to use it, you need to be an AAA member, which costs a minimum of $38 to $80, depending on where you live.

As with the Mini app, a call for assistance puts you into a menu. The first screen gives a choice of phoning AAA, calling 911, or continuing with the electronic request.

A few more fields tell the tow truck if you are on the median or shoulder of the road, what car you are driving, and what you think the problem may be. A final button sends help, without having to speak to anyone at AAA.

The app keeps a copy of your AAA card, replacing the actual card. The app also lists nearby AAA-approved garages, in case you prefer maintenance to a breakdown.
