R55 Really glad my S is an automatic
Really glad my S is an automatic
or I wouldn't be driving myself anywhere
I hurt myself really good at work, moving a patient. I tore the tendon off the distal head of my right biceps muscle. can you say exteme pain?
That was last tuesday, I had the surgery to reattach the tendon this morning and I'm doing fine. One catch though; no driving a stick, no bike riding, no firefighting, no working in the ambulance for at least 6 months or until the Rehab guys and my Orthoprdic Surgeon say yes.
before surgery you can see the muscle balled up at the shoulder, and the end of the tendon just above the elbow

post surgery, all wrapped up

My wife lobbied heavily for an auto in my Clubman...I won. I agree though, that in your situation an auto is critical. Best wishes in healing, and hope you don't go crazy while you're off the bike, I had to stay off for about three months last year due to a back injury and I got pretty irritable.
I've driven stick shift cars all my life, but my knees are killing me, so I got an automatic in my new Clubby and have not regretted it one bit since.
I also track my car at Heartland Park several times a year and have not found the automatic to be a detriment to quick laps at all!
You look like you're in great shape, how the heck did this happen? I could see it if you were a "girly man"
like me........but you're clearly not!

Get well soon so you can get back to the best motoring available.
But i must way when i was younger i broke an left arm and had to drive my stick with just one hand. It was not an easy feat shifting while going around corners.

We were headed for the auto in our clubbie, but since it will be going to our oldest in two years, we decided to get the manual to limit the people who could drive it. I'd be going nuts if I had to look at the MINI but couldn't drive it. Good luck with the rehab.

Yes, best wishes for a speedy recovery! This is one of the handy things about the automatic - it makes it fun for those of us with physical complications, even if they're transient.

nope there were two of us and i held on with my left arm until he had the load stabilized
everyone should own one of these. Polar Care, icewater cooling system by Berg. recirculated ice water from the ice chest via a thin pad over the swelling or in my case surgery site. the ice lasts 8 hours
$70 on ebay

I had a cruder, older version of that for my rotator cuff surgery, thank goodness. Looks as though they've improved the delivery and stats quite a bit.
Glad you're feeling well enough to post and be in some photo shoots, too.

Sometime I do wish my clubbie is an automatic too. Since my wife kept saying she will learn how to drive a stick for a LONG TIME, sometime automatic is a better option for her. But it's all good... coz the clubbie only belongs to me!
Anyway, still wish you the best and recover faster!

I have only owned manual cars.. current car is BMW M5, previous cars were both M3s and manual Toyotas before that.
My wife has a Subaru Outback - an auto that I am forced to drive now and the new Clubman S with auto is arriving next week. I can relate to this as I had surgery few weeks back and will be in a cast the next 2 months at least. Happy I can drive an auto now but I will never buy one for myself.
My ankle surgery was for chipped cartilage from rolling it while playing tennis. I just put a ducati patch to make it cool and heal my pain of missing out on 4 months of not riding my motorcycles or drive my car.
Get well BuzzCut1! I had a surgery in my hand earlier this year and was a in a sling too - much better than standing on one leg for 3-4 months

automatic decision
i am interesting in purchasing a new Mini S. My wife doesn't drive a standard, so I am considering an automatic. I would appreciate feedback on the automatic transmission and the paddle shifter.
thanks
thanks
I've driven stick shift cars all my life but my '09 Clubby is an automatic and I have no issues with it, and I drive it on the road course at Heartland Park several times a year.
The best thing to do is to go drive one of each. The stick feels quicker, but I understand the auto posts a quicker time 0-60........
No one outruns me at the track in a stock Cooper S, stick or automatic.
Around town it's nice to be able to just stick it in D and not worry about it.
The paddle shifters are a mixed blessing. I use mine for engine braking, and as long as you don't add any gas it will hold the gear, but if you lay your foot on the gas even a little, it will upshift - unless you have it in the M mode. Sometimes I downshift coming up to an onramp or something and it wants to upshift before I'm ready, again unless I put it into M.
When I track mine I leave it in M so I can use the paddles, and it's cool because if I forget to upshift it will do it for me at redline. Works well.......
I have to say tho, most of the time I pay no attention to the paddles.........
One other interesting thing, I'm right handed, and even tho there are paddles on both sides of the wheel, I never shift with my left hand! Just like with a stick.......

oh yeah, my son had his shoulder reconstructed & had to use that. I got plastic juice bottles-filled almost to the top w/water & froze 2 of them & used those in the cooler. I always had 2 in the freezer to change them out - worked great. You just have to find the right size to use in the cooler. No mess! That therapy works great - his was hooked up to him when he left the operating room. He even had a robotic wheelchair thing that moved his arm 1/2 degree up & 1/2 degree out - had to use that 8 hours a day for 6 months! Was torture, but he is a sensei 4th degree black belt in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu & you'd never know he had that surgery. Doc promised him he'd be good as new or better as it was such an important part of his life.
So have faith - you'll be all rehabbed soon & back to doing what you do.

Aug 24, got the cast removed , surgical site had 10 stitiches, now I'm in a fixed 90* angle brace for 6 weeks
Orthopedic Surgeon said that the surgery went well and the bicpes and tendon are doing as they should 2 weeks post surgery. Range of motion rehab starts tomorrow but no resistance training for at least another 6-8 weeks

Do you have to remove it to take a shower? Would it be painful if you accidentally "drooped" your arm without the brace? Oddly, although I've heard about people using these braces, I've never seen anyone wearing one on the arm, only on the legs.
