Haunted barn doors

Strangest thing today. Leaving the food store and get in and shut drivers side door then the right side barn door pops open. So I get out, shut the barn door, get in and close drivers door, repeat the right rear and left barn door. etc this happened 4 times. Finally did not shut the drivers door completely and drove away. Anyone else experience this?

I have read of others experiencing this...just can't remember which forum (here or one of the other MINI forums). Hope you get it resolved soon, without incident.

I imagine this has to do with the "can't lock your keys in the car" feature of the convenience package. If it ever happens again, make sure your doors are unlocked when you close the driver's door.

The dealer demoed this to me when I bought mine. Lock all your doors and then drop your key in the boot and shut the barn doors. Your lights flash and the door pops open. I didn't think this would be an issue sitting in the driver's seat, but if the doors were locked after you opened the driver's door, I could see how the logic would kick in.

Might not be the issue, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

Do you have the Comfort Access option? If so, where was your key fob?

Sounds like you have a gremlin! Feed it well and treat it right. How many MINI owners can claim their own Ghost?

Hey Little Bean - this was a very common issue on the 1st gen cars, whereas water would get into the hatch release button and short out the switch (causing it to act like the button was depressed). No way to fix it other than have the dealer replace the hatch (or in this case barn door) release.

Our Cooper did this a lot and we finally had the release replaced, never happened again.

Have you recently washed the car or has it rained?

My 2008 Clubman was doing the same thing - took it to Mini North Scottsdale this past week and there's a Service Bulletin to fix it!

SIB 51 09 08 - should be performed on both doors.

It appears there's a connection that gets wet and corrodes and causes intermittant opening. Get it fixed before it decides to open while you're driving!

Good luck!
William

Little Bean it must have been something in the Gaithersburg air this weekend. Mine popped open several times, fortunately while I was in my alley before I hit the road.
I have been told moisture buildup and faulty wiring may be the cause. This has happened to me particularly after washing the car.

I had the exact opposite problem. Driver side barn door wouldn't open . Dealer replace "corroded wiring", sealed connectors and all is good now.

Same thing happened to me. they had to replace a "micro switch" in the rear door assy. That fixed it and I've had no issues since that time.

Have not had them pop open while driving but have come out several times the first thing in the morning to find the right barn door hanging open while the Clubman is locked.
Took it into the local MINI dealer, they supposedly fixed it (under warrenty) but it has happened again twice so taking it back.

Yep me too... happened a couple of times after car washes. It was always accompanied by a "ticking" sound which lasted about 10 minutes. When the ticking stopped, the door remained closed.

The dealership did confirm corroded wiring and re-sealed the door assembly.

Good luck!

Luving our clubman! Just turn 1,000 miles. Only problem appears to be the barn door opening. Just went out this am and the right door was opened. Rest of car still locked.
After closing the door, I went back in the house and press the unlock barn door button on the fob. The door remained locked when I went back to check. So it wasn't that the door was unlocked accidently from the house.
Also, once the barn door opened while driving. And once the car was unlocked in the am. These first two, I just hoped that one of us just didn't close the door well or accidently unlocked. We have comfort access and it hasn't rain. Hot and dry. Anyone else currently having problems? Any suggestions.

I had the same problem. This is a known issue and a simple fix. They just clean and shrink wrap the micro-switch for the right rear door. All done. No problems since.

Had the doors lock and unlock by themselves when parked in my own garage. After reading all the gremlins stories here I was pretty stressed out. Turned out my friend found the extra remote and was screwing with me. Bastid.

Thanks! Will have it checked/fixed whenever we go in to the dealer for some other reason.

I think I've got the opposite problem. Any threads on: the first open barn door is fine, but the 2nd one (drivers side in the USA) won't open at all. Bummer! I only have half a barn door operable.

Yep, I came home at midnight a week ago and walla-Right Barn door is ajar-must have hit the button on fob by accident.
Today-wake up/coffee in hand-HOLY CRAP the R Barn door is ajar again.
Reading forum sounds like a trip to Mini service.

I just went outside to discover my right barn door was popped open . Luckily the weather is sunny and warm today. Now, last night I went to the store and got some groceries, but I know I closed the doors and remember clearly locking the car before going to bed. Hmmm

Mine (2008 Clubbie S, Auto.) did this several times right after I brought it home. One time, my 60 lb. pitbull was in the back and the fellow behind me was beeping his horn furiously in an attempt to alert me.

I was a wee bit concerned - this wouldn't be so bad on a 2 lane blacktop at 30 mph, but having it spring open whilst driving 75 mph on the highway would most definitely NOT be cool. The dealership had me bring it in *immediately* and worked their jiggery pokery on it. It's been working fine for the past year and I am hopeful that they have solved the problem.

And that is a GOOD THING for them, my pitbull would not be too happy to find himself tumbling down the highway. I'm guessing that if he lived, he'd want to have an "up close and personal" conversation with the mechanic who did the fix...<g>

Any chance of someone having a picture of where this micro switch is or a description where to find it and what I'd be looking for?? Sounds like a GREAT piece of preventative maintenance to do.............
