R55 Clubman Real Fuel Consumption
I am getting numbers no where near 40. I get 29ish city and 35ish highway. My tank by tank numbers fluctuate in a narrow range in the low 30s. This fluctuation reflects the mix of local vs highway.
I do get extraordinary (40 or so) on the first half of a tank. I make this statement based on the OBC's projected miles remaining according to the fuel in the tank (plus, of course, the elapsed miles thus far.) However, those numbers never hold later in any given tank. I guess the tank has an odd shape for which the OBC does not adjust.

Very good for an automatic! I'd be happy with that too.
Picked up the Clubby (manual, non-S) almost 3 weeks ago. It has about 1500miles on it now, and when I filled it up last weekend, it had gone 471 miles and took 13.0 gallons (36.2mpg) and it was our usual mixed driving - about 30% city, 70% highway. OBC claimed 37.5mpg, which is actually more accurate than I had expected. The wife is thrilled with the mileage; I am pretty happy also and expect it to gradually improve as the engine loosens up a bit more.
I'm starting to think there is something wrong with my car (clubbie S). I've only got 175 miles on it (in 2 weeks), but my OBC is showing less than 22mpg! I was getting better than that in my chipped Audi 1.8T. I still haven't figured out what represents 1/2 a tank on the stupid gas gauage, but I'm probably under the 1/2 tank point.
Probably 85% of the driving has been very short trips (<3 miles) in stop and go traffic at lights. The AC is ALWAYS on (summer in Florida). I haven't taken the RPMs above 4500 and I've tried to keep the turbo off line, so despite the stop and go, I've been trying to drive it soft.
I'm VERY dissapointed at this rate. I don't know if it is becuase I'm still so early in break in or not. Nearly every time I get out of the car, even after a 3 mile trip, the front fans are on and the car hood near the scoop is very hot. The engine seems to drive fine, but could something else be wrong causing the mileage to be this bad?

Regarding the OBC...so I've learned!
Will need to buy gas today. Drum roll, please.
Second tank: 38.6 calculated!
Happy man, I am.
Now, I've got a question I'd like to add to the equation: I notice that the S owners are (maybe more than) incrementally lower on fuel mileage. For the non-S owners, can someone comment on what their wheel/wheel size/tire setup is? I'm curious to see what folks with the factory 16" wheels (like S-winders and Bridgespokes) are getting.

Fuel MPG
Filled up for the first time today in my new Clubman S (
) Manual Transmission
Fuel in: 12.951 g
Octane: 93
Miles: TBD
Station: Kwik Fill, East Aurora, NY
(Kwik Fill is all North American Gas, and has no Ethanol to my understanding in it, which should result in better mileage for those of you in my area)
Fuel from Dealer (Assuming he topped it off, which is unlikely IMO) lasted 340 mi. Down to 2 "bars" on the gas gauge, pulled in with "47 miles" to go according to the OBC.
Assuming top off, gas calculations are as follows:
City (Suburbs/Around town) / Highway = 60 / 40
Fuel "used" : 12.951 g
Miles Traveled: 340
OBC MPG average: 29.0 mpg
Hand Calculated Average: 26.25 mpg
***First day I got it I didn't know how to drive stick, so this number includes about an hour of start/stall time in a parking lot ***

Frankly, I just don't understand what constitutes City driving and what constitutes Highway driving. (I wonder if it would be more accurate to look at the Average Speed per tank?) I tend to think my driving is about 50/50 City/Highway but I really don't know what qualifies as each. I live in the DC area and we have some of the worst traffic in the country, per the media.
Here are my stats on my first six tanks. This is for an 08 Clubman S, Manual.
(I didn't record all the readings for the first tank from the dealer):
OBC.... Act MPG........ Speed .........Dist ........Gals ........Grade
31.5 .................................................. ....................Premium?
31.1 .......28.3 ............35.2 ..........365 ........12.9 .......Mid Grade
31.7 .......28.8 ............35.2 ..........388........ 13.48 ......Mid Grade
32.3*......29.99........... 37.2 ..........368........ 12.27 ......Prem
32.4*......29.68 ...........35.2 ..........388 ........13.09 ......Prem
32.6*......29.99 ...........37.6 ..........400.5...... 13.4 .......Prem
(* on last three tanks, I did not reset mpg on the obc, but did reset the speed)
AC is on 99% of the time. Started using the Sport Button all the time for the last three tanks, so I've concluded that it does not affect mpg, at least with a manual transmission.
My comute is fairly consistent. I'm not babying it. (Also, the next to last tank involved an extended ride into downtown DC with pretty heavy traffic)
FWIW, I have noticed that when I ran the two mid-grade tanks, my tail pipes were very clean afterwards. When I run premium, I get a fairly heavy black soot on the ends of the pipes.
BTW, I am very happy with these figures!! I was getting 12.5 mpg with my SUV!

Just over 2000 miles in two weeks of ownership
Had to get that darn break in done! Averaging 31mpg both manual and computer. Mix of city/country and highway. I do not hypermile my car highway avg is 75mph.
Very happy so far.
Cheers,
John

That's pretty impressive mileage for the DC area. When I lived there, it seemed like 50% of my "driving" time was at a standstill.
Question: If I'm sitting in a traffic jam on 495, does that count as "highway miles"?

ok, you guys figure out this average.
last Sunday morning, NO TRAFFIC, I drove all over Manhattan in preparation of a MINI Rally I am putting together.
It took me 1:40 minutes to cover 17 miles!

Lurch, must have been all those photo ops!
And good point about the stuck in traffic mode, richs10.
Definitely noticed that if my OBC's average speed for the tank thus far is at 32 or above the mpgs go up dramatically.

If it is one hour 40 minutes it sounds like you were sitting in rush hour traffic.
I used to be able to do 17 miles in manhattan mid day on a weekday and do it with 5-6 stops to drop off audio gear and have it done in about one hour some time a little more sometimes a little less.
17 miles/1.667 hours = 10.2 MPH
How much time was involved for the bagel stop?

What I have seen as our in town avg speed is around 17-19mph. Which isn't bad considering the speed limit on the city streets are 25MPH.
Couple thoughts:
Avg. speed per tank is a good metric, but still not perfect. As an extreme example, one driver could sit a long time in stop 'n go traffic, then get on the interstate & open it up to 80. Sounds like this could be DC! Another driver may not have much stop 'n go, however maybe they also drive slower on the interstate. In theory, the average speed of both drivers could be similar, but the 2nd driver will no doubt have better mpg.
I try to look at performance by the tankful, however I also will "reset" if I know my upcoming driving will be mostly one type (city or highway). In that way I get a better idea of mpg for each type. Granted, this is not perfect either.
Finally, a pet peeve. My OBC is consistently "optimistic" by 1.7 - 2.3 mpg, and my speedometer is also high by about 2.5 - 3 mph at highway speeds. Not the end of the world, but what about German precision?? From reading other comments, it sounds like these are common conditions.

I think you should drive the car instead of pushing it.
btw, I was born in Queens. Grandma lived on 130th Street near Liberty Ave. My mother's house was near Stallone's Bakery in Ozone Park (I wonder if the bakery is still there?) Dad moved us all to Maryland when I was 2 so I don't have the NY accent my cousins do.
