Engine Light

Engine light - BMW puzzled!?
Well here it is the full third day my car (2008 Clubman S) has been in for engine light at 2,000 miles! The engine light came on Tuesday, I had it towed Wednesday morning - no action taken! Thursday - I call at 1:00pm, they say the codes are clear - no evidence of an issue (light still on)! They contact BMW - they say flash the computer return to customer. They flash engine light comes on! BMW - check fuel for too much alcohol - fuel fine (I had Texaco 95 in it!). Engine light still on intermittent! The Service Advisor says he is working with the shop supervisor and tech to look at all systems. That was Thursday night - I relent and let them keep on working - want to get to the bottom hoping for Friday return and long rides in the car! Friday - I call back at 1:00pm - SA not in today someone else handling is stuff, she went to look for tech, came back tech is at lunch, she will call back! I wait, wait, wait, at 3:45pm I call, many times - finally get through! The new SA, goes and looks for the tech, he tells me the same information I got yesterday - contacting BMW, not sure what the problem is! Jeez, now they are keeping the car - for the weekend, and will get back with me Monday!
>>They can't figure out a tiny tiny engine - hate to see what they do with the big beemers!
If anyone can help me point the BMW service department in the right direction it would be appreciated!
I know how these things can go - I am a past VW Touareg 2004 owner - basically a chump - I hope this beautiful driving car doesn't turn into a "touareg"!!
Please HELP

It could be your gas cap. If you do not tighten your gas cap enough it will trip your engine light. You'll have to bring it to the dealership to have them check it and reset it.

We just bought an BMW X3 and they told my wife to make sure she tightened it down because people get it all the time. I'm not saying this is the case, but you never know...

Dealership has the car, it isn't the gas cap issue, they don't even know...they checked the gas quality..not the problem...I always tightened to the "one click" like the sales rep told me - I have heard the stories...

take a look at this thread ...
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=140587

mine had the light come on from day one, but all looks ok now once they replaced the Exhaust Vanos Solenoid ... it came faulty straight from the factory.
might be the same issue on yours ...

I had the same problem while driving home from the dealership on day 1 !!! Mine was just a loose gas cap, have not seen it again since... I always click it 3 or more times just to be sure!

I think the problem is that you took it to BMW. I would bring it to a MINI dealer.

Don't have anything diagnostic to add - just a yr 2000+ 3 x VW veteran adding his 2 cents.

NOTHING can be worse than the VW dealership experience - at least you're probably driving a loaner vs the Eurovan shuttle . Also - the MINI may not be the most sorted vehicle on the planet but you're 3 production yrs into most of its systems so I very much doubt that you're looking at an 04 Touareg situation (a perfect storm of a c**********k if there ever was one).

Take a deep breath and look forward to getting your clubbie back!

In Annapolis the BMW and the Mini dealer are the same! So the service department is Beemer and Mini!

The news - High Pressure Fuel Pump. The SA states that mine was the first - and that since mine got there they have had two more with the same issue..he thinks there might be a problem with the part as a whole!

They have now had the car 8 DAYS!!!!
Longer then I have driven it!

Unfortunately, this is my first post. I bought my MINI on the 7th of June and had to get towed to the dealer on the 20th. I didn't even "motor" for two weeks before there was a problem. The CEL came on and the car was sputtering. They called today to tell me that it was a bad spark plug.

I know things happen, but this is really a downer. There's a thread on here somewhere that has the link to the J.D. Power Initial Quality survey and MINI is second to worst, ahead of only Jeep. They really need to get it together. I looked at the survey before I bought the car and I now see first hand how MINI got ranked where it did.

What I really don't understand is why they had to order a spark plug. The car won't be ready until tomorrow when the plug comes in. How can a service department not have any spark plugs in stock when they only service one car (in three versions)?

I have a non-S Cooper, stick shift.
