Aftermarket Wind Deflector

I'm looking for a better price on a wind deflector that at the dealer. I saw one that says installtion not included. Is there any special installation that needs to be done, Or does it just clip in?

Has anyone had any luck finding a good aftermarket deflector?

Thanks

Jim

I've never seen or heard of an aftermarket one as of yet..

The OEM IS expensive but they sure do work good...

As bamatt said - ebay is the way to go. Sometimes even better deals than the Morristown price can be found there (e.g. I bought mine slightly used from a former cabrio owner). As far as I (or any of us) knows, there is no aftermarket solution - only the OEM one.

They require NO "installation" - just clips in and out in 30 seconds.

The they ARE worth $300+ (though the dealer retail price is pretty crazy).

The wind deflector makes it *a bit* less windy and less noisy with the windows down - it's better, but IMHO not a HUGE difference. Where it really shines is with the top down, windows up on cold days. When the windows are up it's VERY quiet in the car and there is very little wind. So it extends your top down motoring season in colder climes.

Morristown MINI sells them $299 on their web site, cheaper than on their E-Bay posting! There is nothing special to install. Put the tabs in the holes and "Let's Motor".

Good move Rita, you won't believe the difference it makes. Mine stays in place all the time. If I want more 'air' I just fold the upright portion down. Gets cool in the evening, fold it right back up.

I've also noticed that the back seat stays a lot cleaner with the deflector in place. Before getting the deflector, the beige leather in my wife's car was getting filthy in no time at all from dust/dirt in the air.

benefits?

This may sound foolish - but I've never used a deflector before and although I understand why one would get it – I always thought it would just be in the way. Does it really sit between the driver and passengers seats (not that I really have anyone back there ever). Also, does it just clip into the slots that are already at each side of the back seats? Or is a lot of effort required every time I want to replace or remove it?

Comes in and out - and folds - easily. I run with mine in except when I need to haul the kids - then I can take it out and store it in the boot in about 60 seconds. Uses the two hole on either side that you refer to. Really sits over the back seat, not really "between" the seats. Can fold flat in which case it still reduces buffetting by keeping the wind out of the back seat. But when folded up, it reduces the amount of wind that blows *forward" from the back into the front seat area. Here's how I use it:

1) When cold outside - deflector up, windows up, top down. Creates a very comfortable "micro climate" in the front seat area of the car. I can talk on the cellphone, etc. with almost no noise. With a jacket on I can get down into the 40s or below comfortably. I also use the config when I need to be on the phone but want the top down. It's unbelievable quiet compared to any other top-down scenario.

2) When warm outside and no need to use the phone - top and windows down. Deflector up if I don't want a lot of wind. Deflector down if I want wind.

It's quite well engineered and convenient to deal with - just pretty expensive. Though a small percentage of the cost of the car - and it greatly extends the top-down motoring season and situations.

It only costs 1% of what a 30K cars costs. You can easily take a 100 mile trip with out the wind beating you and your sweet heart up. It will increase your top down pleasure a whole lot more than the 1% cost!

I couldn't agree with you more!!

I find that even with the top down there is a backdraft (wind from behind me) if I don't have the deflector up. Since I have long hair, I prefer not to have that wind frizzing up my hair, so my deflector is up ALWAYS!!

I rode with another Cabrio owner who had one to see the difference. One ride and I was sold!!
