Convertible: Kids, Wind & Hair - HELP

I wanted a convertible sports car. Wife insisted on a back seat for our 6 year old daughter. We bought an MCSC, and I love it. But my daughter hates driving with the top down, especially at fast speeds, because the wind is too much for her. We've tried hats, headbands, goggles, ponytails, etc., but she feels like they are going to blow off her head. I think we need something like a hat with a chin strap and some goggles. Maybe motorcycle people have a solution to this problem. Any ideas? Is it just my kid, or is this a general issue? Thanks for your help

Nope, not just your kidlet. My 9-year-old hates the top down if we're going very far or fast. He's whipped around something fierce and can't feel the air or the heat if it's on, or hear us when we speak to him.

A compromise, when he's with us, is to have the sunroof open, all the windows down. He doesn't get blown away and says it feels like he's in a roller coaster.

My 7 y.o. son doesn't complain until outside temps head south of 65 F. He really enjoys the ride and actually dislikes the wind from the sunroof mode more than going top down.

Or, maybe he does complain and I just can't hear him with the road noise and the XM playing.

Have you tried running with the top down, but all the windows up? That might provide enough protection from turbulence for your rear seat passengers to be comfortable...

1) Trade kids with Indimini? 2) windows up
3) kid rides shotgun
4) hand her a pinwheel

Buy her a full coverage motorcycle helmet and a chatterbox intercom system. People will stare, she'll be happy.

I have a 5 year old and a 11 year old and they both love having the top down, even when it is kind of cool out. I plan ahead by bringing a blanket or something so they are warm though. I drive on the autobahn at speeds well over 65 with the top down and the windows up with no problems. It is a little windy at times and maybe a bit much, so I slow down a bit and it helps. But, overall they both love having the top down, all of the time!

By the way, the pinwheel idea will probably work out pretty well!

Will she wear a scarf over her head? She can tie it under her chin or wear it bandana style with it tied at the base of her neck. Plus, you can get some really neat looking scarves that she might like. I'm not real big on convertibles either because I always have to spend 20 minutes trying to comb all the knots out of my hair unless I wear a scarf

I've tried blankets, bandanas, sunglasses. She gets so upset about the wind that she puts her head down against her legs with the blanket over her. She won't enjoy the wind or the view. I'm thinking about getting these:

http://www.themommymarketplace.com/K...s-p-16386.html

along with a bandana for her hair, but I don't think she'll sit upright long enough to give them a chance.

I have not tried a pinwheel. Babysitter may be a solution.

It's really too bad, because I LOVE open air driving. And some of her friends have gone for test-drives and love it too. She's very stubborn and picky. She like the car with the top closed, but hates it with the top open.

Mandaboo: with respect to hair knots - this is just one more advantage to going bald

Top Down, Windows UP! Use A/C or heater and it works well. Windscreen takes away 95% of the wind, but kids cant sit in backseat. I too thought wind would be a problem but from 0-95 MPH with windows up and windscreen we NEVER have a problem!

Tell her that life is full of unpleasant situations and if the worst experience she ever has is rough wind in the back of a MINI cabrio, then she should consider herself lucky!

I have a 5 y.o. and having the windows up really works. However, she doesn't like it when the sun is really intense. In that case, I make her wear a cap and sunblock . MiniMac2005

Your problem is the child not the car. You have to make a choice. I know it isn't an easy choice but it has to be made. The kid's got to go

I have 6 grandkids and they all fight over who gets to ride with Call (my grandkids call me Call...thats another thread). Of coarse one has just got his license and always wants to drive. His has got to go

I've been hoping to see a creative aftermarket company come up with a wind blocker that fits over & between the roll hoops, like the ones I've seen for the Porsche Boxter and Honda S2000.

Same thing here.

The cover for the BMW Z4 might work or the plastic generic insert for porsche and other companies will work , but dont line up the best. Check on NAM and MINI2, they are a plexiglass sheld that is cut out to the hole then straps on the roll overs.
They don't look factory but i guess they work.
Old Z3's have one that might work.
I have been checking the BMW ETK for something , but no luck.
And the wind deflector is $$$.
Hope this helps.

Shave her head & a pinwheel?

Try making a homemade shield out of thin plywood or something & if it works make it out of plexiglass or lexan.(how do you spell lex-an, san, zan ?)

Some company used to sell "hat clips" to the Miata crowd. These cords clip to the back of your hat on one end and to the back of your shirt collar on the the other end. Your hat may blow off, but it won't blow away. You can make them yourself with name tag clips and some 550 cord.

Without getting Dr. Phil involved, I'd say it's just your kid.

I would start her on a strict musical diet ASAP of 100% ....

After about a month, she'll become a convert and want to look like her idol.

Proceed immediately to barber with copy of album cover.

Pay $11 and come home with the top down.

Problem solved.
